There is a dog in Laurelville,
Ohio. It has a collar on but must be either lost or someone dumped
him/her. One of the locals was telling me that it just lays in the
woods behind her house and howls and whimpers. Guys at the saw mill
leave food out for it and the lady also feeds it but no one has been
able to win it's trust. We are going to try to set up a live trap
for it if we can find one that someone will let us borrow. There is
no way possible I can bring this dog home until the three fosters I
have find a home but I still want to try to help it. If there is
anyone out there willing to help with this poor creature PLEASE I am
begging you to contact me. My number is 740-779-0268. Ask for
Crystal. I can't stand to see this poor guy like he is. Call
anytime.
Thanks!

New Beginnings Animal Shelter needs two foster homes
New Beginnings Animal Shelter is in need of 2 foster homes. 7
kittens were brought into a home just before that the below freezing
weather hit. They are all
younger than 3 months - 2 of them are just 10 weeks old. If you can
foster the 2 10 week olds or the 5 other kittens (we can split these
2 and 3) please contact me immediately.
NBAS will pay for all medical care and
will provide food when we have been able to get it donated. We do
have litter available right now that we donated. The foster will
provide lots of love and socialization, trips to the vet and when
they are ready, take them to adoptions.
This rescue group is located in (or
near) Reynoldsburg, OH.
Thanks for your continuing support of the animals!

These two dogs deserve the BEST!
So if you can't provide a home
filled with lots of tender love and affection,
you need not apply!
Here's their story:
Jet and Lark have been boarding
at a friend of ours kennel off and on
for the past four years.
They have always been well-behaved,
affectionate, and do well in dog group playtime.
JET
is a 9 yr black lab
LARK
is a 7 year reddish-golden lab
Both are female and have been spayed.
Neither have any health issues
and are still very active.
Looking at Lark you would assume
she about 4 years old if you didn't know her age.
Even though Jet is older she
is actually more playful than Lark,
and shows no sign of slowing down!
Their owners had a baby last year
and unfortunately the baby is allergic to the dogs.
The owners are heartbroken
as they love their dogs, but
they must put the health of their baby first.
They have tried various remedies and vaccines
for both the baby and the dogs to
alleviate the allergies with no luck.
They have even tried keeping the dogs
in their garage and not in the house
but anytime the baby is even outdoors she
has an allergic reaction.
This is a definite allergy confirmation.
My friend, Mary, has been fostering (boarding) Jet and
Lark
now for over a 2 months and would love to find them
a home before Christmas, especially if both
could be adopted together.
They really love each other
and we realize how difficult it will be
to not only find homes for middle aged dogs
but to keep them together.
Hopefully the photos I took will express
the reason WHY they really need to be adopted together.
They grew up with each other.
They really are great dogs and
absolutely no trouble at all.
They are housebroken.
They have been around children and have done
fine.
Here is what their former human family has to say
about these two very special girls:
Jet - The biggest heart in the world,
sweet, loving, devoted. Loves everyone, but always lets you know if
there is a stranger in her yard. Adores children. Lives to
please her owners. A kinder, more gentle dog you could not find.
Larkspur
(Lark) -
Great family pet, adventurous, very playful. Loves company and is
content whether she is with one member of the family or with a
houseful of people. Loves to run and play ball.
If you are interested in
giving these sweetie pies the
loving home they are hoping for...

LEARNING ABOUT DOGS... FROM DOGS
by ROBIN
Giant teeth, gleaming white. Wild howls and barks.
Mighty leaps and lunges. Overpowering strength. Painful bites. Until
just a few months ago, those were the images I associated with dogs.
For most of my life, I kept my distance from all dogs. I never went
very close to them, especially not the big ones, for fear that I would
be trapped between massive paws and then devoured in bone crunching
jaws. But rescue transports have taught me to not fear dogs.
Yes, thats right. Until just a few months ago, I
was afraid of dogs. I had every reason to be, too, or so I thought. I
had been bitten by a dog as a child and the memory of the pain and
terror had never left me.
My grandpa and uncle had always raised German
Shepherds. I was only four when one of those German Shepherds, a
female named Lady, jumped at me and bit my face, almost taking my eye.
Lady had been playing with a toy, lazily stretched out between my
uncle and my cousin in the yard near the house. I rounded the corner
from the barn and for some reason Lady thought I was coming for her
toy. I dont remember the actual event. My mind has erased that
portion of the memory, but I do remember riding to the hospital on the
laps of my mom and dad who passed me back and forth, wet wash cloths
absorbing the blood that felt like tears on my face.
With only a tiny crescent moon shaped scar under my
eye, I was not hugely deformed by the dog bite. Yet, while I was not
scarred physically, I was scarred emotionally. I avoided dogs and did
not trust them.
When we would go to visit my uncle or my grandpa
after I was bitten, my mom would carry me so the dogs, including Lady,
could not touch me. Or I would run, fast, fast, fast, from the car to
the house to escape the demonic hounds that lurked in the yard. If a
dog came up behind me, nose nuzzling and sniffing my legs or hair, I
instantly went stiff and searched for the nearest adult, who I would
climb, treelike, to minimize any contact with the dogs who licked my
toes even as I pulled my feet up away from their open mouths. I
imagine now that the dogs must have been very confused by my actions.
I remember one time, sitting in the car, waiting
for my uncle to come out and put the dogs in the gated yard so I could
get out and go in the house. The dogs were running and leaping around
the car, joyous to see a visitor. My cousins were playing in the yard,
too, jumping and dancing with the dogs, unafraid. I watched them in
misery and began to cry. I was trapped in the car. Trapped not by the
dogs. But by my fear.
So what in the world possessed me to do rescue
transports for dogs? I dont really know why I decided to help. I
guess it was just the overwhelming sadness that pervaded the emails
about dogs that were going to be euthanized if they did not find a way
out of the shelters where they were trapped. I had originally joined a
pet rescue group on the internet to help stray cats. But while I was
saving cats, I also felt drawn to save the dogs.
And so I began to become acquainted with dogs.
These dogs were not like the dogs I remembered from my childhood.
These dogs were so nice, laying heads against my legs and offering
noses to be rubbed. These dogs were so grateful, walking happily
through grass or sniffing contentedly at sidewalks and tennis shoes
and pants legs. These dogs had huge soulful eyes that contained all
the happiness of the world in their shadowed depths, reflecting back
to me not the suffering they had endured, but the hope they now had.
A few weeks ago, I found myself transporting four
dogs. I was, Ill admit, a bit hesitant. Two of the dogs were rescue
tethered, and the third, a giant black lab, was crated. But when I
stopped to get the fourth dog, the lab, who I had taken out for a
walk, refused to get back in the crate. He also refused to ride in the
back of my van with the other dogs. Barks and growls ensued and I was
at a loss as to what to do with this monstrously big dog.
The lab made the decision for me. He hopped up on
to the front seat of the van, riding shot gun and positioning himself
so that he had a clear view out the passenger side window. I hurriedly
wrapped his leash around the arm rest, hoping that by tethering him in
place, he would stay on his side of the van.
Oh, God, I kept thinking to myself. Just let him
stay over there. All my old fears flooded through me and I imagined
the lab leaping for my throat or barring giant teeth to devour me in
one tasty bite. I was trembling and breathing hard and trying not to
show my panic for fear that the lab would notice. Dont let them see
your fear, my uncle had always advised. I couldnt do it as a child
and I had a hard time doing it with the lab.
For the next hour and a half, the lab and I rode
together. I eyed him warily every few seconds. He gazed contentedly at
the passing cars. The same prayer repeated itself over and over in my
head. Please God, just let us get there.
Ten miles from our destination, traffic slowed to a
stop. Road construction added another grueling delay and both the lab
and I were dismayed. He began to bark. I became more distraught. And
then it happened. The lab got down off the seat and came toward me,
the tethered leash long enough for him to easily reach me. Placing
two, huge, black paws on my lap, he put his nose against my face. At
that moment, he was close enough to see, smell, taste, and, literally,
wallow in my fear. There was no hiding my feelings as I waited to see
what he would do.
The lab hoisted himself up and pulled all eighty
pounds of menacing black fur into my lap. Then he laid his head on my
shoulder and looked out the window, tail thumping contentedly against
my arm.
While it is hard to quell my fear sometimes, I
realize now that most dogs will not hurt me unless they themselves are
afraid or uncertain. That was exactly the case with my uncles dog.
Looking back, I know that Lady was teased and bullied. I was just the
unwitting victim of those unfortunate circumstances. Unfortunate for
both me and Lady.
I have cats, but I can no longer say that I am a
cat person only. Dogs have found a way into my life. And I am trapped
by their presence again. Trapped not by fear this time, but by new
emotions, one of which, undeniably, is puppy love.

Hi;
I
know that everyone reads week after week the urgent pleas from the
people working on behalf of the Columbiana County dogs in Lisbon,
Ohio. The dogs are always euthanized at 7 am on Tuesdays and so it
is always an eleventh hour mission to try to find someone to take
them before they are taken to the gas chamber. I am writing this in
the hope that some type of regular transport route will be able to
be established to get the dogs safely from the Columbiana pound. I
thought that if people knew just how sad this place really is, they
might be prompted to rescue these poor animals.
I went to the Columbiana County pound last week to pick up dogs for
Liz Jones of Peaceable Kingdom in Allentown, PA. Liz routinely
tries to save the dogs in Columbiana even though she is on the
opposite side of PA from the dogs and the Ohio border (an 8 hour
trip to get to them, which Liz has made on several occasions just to
save a dog or two). One of the major problems with this shelter is
that it is the only shelter for the entire county. It is out in the
middle of nowhere, far from major cities where transports routinely
travel through. I had to drive over 3 hours from Columbus to reach
the shelter. When I reached Lisbon, the pound was on the outskirts
of town next to the county jail ( I guess they like to keep all the
prisoners, no matter the species, in the same area). The pound was
back a twisty country road and I only found it because the dog
warden had told me to watch for a Bail Bondsman bill board at the
end of the road. When I drove up the gravel path to the shelter, I
was saddened to see three buildings that looked abandoned. They
were metal and wood structures that had definitely been there a long
time. I thought I was in the wrong place until I saw all the dogs.
This in itself was shocking to me, because I had been on the shelter
web site earlier that morning and there was only one dog listed. I
thought that all the dogs had been saved for the week and only one
was needing to be rescued before Tuesday morning. But there were at
least ten dogs chained up in an open crescent moon shaped building
that looked like an airplane hanger. This building had sides, a
back, and a curved roof, but the front was completely open to the
elements. The dogs were chained on a dirt floor exposed to the
heat. They did not have water dishes in front of them and I later
learned that a bucket of water is routinely carried around for each
dog to get a drink out of.
The dogs were so excited to see me. They jumped and barked and
wagged tails in excitement. There was no one else there except me
and the shelter staff. I was the only hope to come up that driveway
and I think the dogs sensed that. They were so happy with tongues
lolling and big dog grins on their faces.
I parked and got out to go into the dog warden's building. There
were three dogs chained up along the sidewalk leading into the side
of the building. Two of those dogs turned out to be the ones I was
picking. They, of course, greeted me in the same excited way as the
dogs in the airplane hanger building--leaps and barks of joy. The
building where the dogs were housed was low and dark. The kennels
were open to the main walkway but had cement walls to divide one dog
from another. There were drain ditches in the floor directly in
front of the area where the dogs were kept to allow the cement to be
washed down as needed. There were no dogs currently inside and the
floor was wet. It was very dark inside with no windows. The dog
warden greeted me and led me down the cement aisle to the office
beyond. I passed one cement kennel with several small puppies
asleep inside--puppies probably only a few weeks old.
I want to state that the dog warden and the staff who helped me were
very nice and friendly. They helped me load the dogs and made sure I
had all the records I needed. This is just a very poor area and
there are no funds to support the pound. Dogs who come here are on
Death Row with little or no chance to be saved. This pound is a one
way ticket to the Gas Chamber.
I could not wait to get out of there. The stark
surroundings and dark cement kennels reminded me of concentration
camps I had viewed on television. I could only think sadly of dogs
blindly led with hopeful enthusiasm to a place where there is no
return. When I left with the two dogs I was able to save, dogs that
now have wonderful forever homes, the dogs left behind barked and
cried out and begged in their dog voices for me to come back and
take them, too. While I wish that I would not ever have to see that
place again, the only way I can save the dogs there is to go
back over and over and load them up and drive them away. If I, or
someone else, cannot find their way to the Columbiana County Shelter
on a regular basis, the dogs have only one other way to leave that
place. And that is on the garbage truck.
The dogs are gassed on Tuesdays,
because that is the same day the garbage is picked up. Please help
get some type of rescue system set up for the dogs of Columbiana
County.
Thank you for taking the time to read my plea. If
you know anyone in the area of Eastern Ohio or Western Pennsylvania
who might be able to help with Columbiana County, please forward
this to them and beg them to save these dogs.

LANCASTER OHIO ANIMAL FAIR
Fairfield County Fairgrounds
It's time to mark your calendars for the next Lancaster Ohio Animal
Fair. It is August 29 and September 26 from 12:30 - 4:00p.
Last month was great! The people who live in Lancaster and attended
were very excited this event was taking place. They are very eager
to help. Here is a statement or two from last month's event:
"I couldn't believe the number of people that showed up. We were
steady with crowds from 1-4. There were several that showed up before
we even to start. We also had a jar full of donations! Normally when
we go to rescue events, we are lucky to get one donation. There were
people that showed up just to stop in and thank rescuers for what
they were doing and were going around giving donations. The people
were real friendly and very excited that we were all there. I had
from many people they were glad that Lancaster finally had something
going in their area. I was just amazed at the towns people who were
so excited. WOW!!"
"Lancaster Animal Fair was a success today! We had a good turn out
and to my surprise, these people really were hoping for something
like this in that area. Next month will be better and the next month
even better!!! So many that were suppose to be here did not come
but we had 5 rescues show up. I myself got about 10 applications and
many people to call or they will be calling me. For the first time
since I have been doing adoption events, I got donations! This is a
real plus! For me, this event was a complete success and can't wait
for the next one to come along. I have apps on the two dogs I took
with me and on a dog that was home. So out of all of this, two will
probably be definitely adopted out which is good! Next month I will
take more with me if I have them!!!!
We do have some others very interested in joining us and looking
forward to hearing from them but all in all, it was a good day!!
Everyone had more than enough room to spread out!!! More room is
available! We could probably set up 40 - 50 rescues or more in the
area's that are available to us. We have electric available, bathroom
available and just a wonderful place to have an adoption event! It
is great to know that we have wonderful neighbors that do care about
animals. We are looking at this to grow and grow to eventually a very
large event! I talked to many people today and they plan on
attending next months also to see who and what is new!"
You will need to bring your own tables, chairs, tents, and anything
you wish to bring to sell to help raise money for your group. You
will need to make sure you bring water for your animals since we are
in the warm summer months.
ALL animals must be current on all vaccines and neutered or spayed.
We ask that all animals brought to the event by a rescue group be
kept under control, well behaved, groomed, etc.
There is a non-refundable $15 per event setup fee to help cover the
cost of the fairgrounds. The fee must be paid at least one week
prior to the event. There is a one-time application/agreement that
will need to be filled out for each rescue/vendor attending. The
fairgrounds have been reserved through September and then a decision
will be made whether to change the day of the event, etc.
If you are interested in attending in this event, please email Linda
Simmons (pomlvr@wowway.com) or
Tracie Cobb (tracie@tlcrescue.com
or

to receive your application/agreement and
for further information. You may also visit the website, for more

I just came back from the vet to
check on the puppies. They all have ear infections
conjunctivis, and tonsillitis.
The males have infection in
sheath of penis, females have vaginal infections, joints are
loose, indicating poor nutrition, AND two of them have a round
bald spot on their back which the vet said was a burn of some
sort after he did a scraping that was negative for anything
else. All this can be cleared up and the tails will be
reconstructed, dews removed and heaven only knows why these
poor puppies are sweet and kissing everyone. They have got to
be so miserable. I will have another update later in the day.
I haven't slept much the last two days and, will be back at
the vet again in a couple of hours with two other dogs :(

PLEASE SAVE STELLA!! SHE IS OUT OF TIME!!

Hello - my name is Cheryl and I just recently joined this group -
I'm a member of several other dog rescue groups and was invited to join
this one. I had to respond to this email - I just recently adopted
another dog from Ohio when I found out from a rescue friend she was
slated to die in the gas chamber. I think it's horrible that Ohio still
gasses it's dogs and cats. I live in Erie, PA - I just checked mapquest
and I'm about two hours away from Lisbon, Ohio. Please, if anyone needs
animals pulled and temp boarded until they can get into a rescue,
consider me. I have a small house, but could pull two or three dogs at a

THESE BEAUTIFUL BABIES ARE IN CARROLLTON CO. DOG POUND to DIE FRIDAY
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT COLUMBIANA IN OHIO: I'm sure most of you have seen
posts about the Columbiana, Ohio county dog pound. It seems like every
week we get messages saying that Columbiana is overcrowded and they are
going to begin gassing dogs to make space.
Liz Jones of Peaceable Kingdom rescue in Allentown, PA has done a
wonderful job pulling dogs from Columbiana County and getting them into
rescue. Liz estimates she has saved about 20 dogs from that horrible
place. But she's having a very hard time finding volunteers in the area
to pull dogs for her while she arranges transport to PA. Right now Liz
has 5 dogs sitting in the Columbiana pound, already altered and waiting
for her to pull, but the person who usually helps her with this seems to
have disappeared. Liz will pay the adoption fees, but once she has paid,
the dogs have to be pulled within 48 hours or she loses both the money
and the dogs!
Columbiana County is in eastern Ohio, south of Youngstown and east of
Canton. There really aren't any large towns in Columbiana, which seems
to make it harder to find volunteers. If you know ANYONE in eastern
Ohio or western PA who might be able to help, will you please forward
this message to them? I am in Ohio, but about 2-1/2 hours away from
Columbiana Co. Volunteers can contact Liz at
ljones@ot.com.
Thanks so much!

Does Ohio have a PR
problem? These rescuers seem to think so...
Subject: my rant....- not understood
Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2004 23:50:10 -0500
Hi All;
I did not intend to critizie any rescue
worker in OHIO....I was writing to blast the people who are the
cause of your overpopulation of strays..the people who don't
spay..those who dump newborns into the pounds..and the BREEDERS
It seems that only rescue people read
rants & raves..since they are the only ones , who responded...so
when i post under PETS on craigslist..in the 3 OHIO states. I
guess no one reads those posts, either..that is very
disheartening.
I am not "wealthy"..a professional dog
walker, cat sitter..who cannot walk dogs now, after a botched up
hip replacement surgery. I rescue in my neighborhood. A woman
died a few months ago and left 5 dogs. I got them homes,
including a 49lb, 11 yr old beagle, by putting flyers & pics of
the orphaned dogs on every lampost in my neighborhood currently
living w/ 14 cats & an old Husky/shep.13.yrs old.( NO MORE DOGS
ALLOWED IN MY BLDG). I fought 2 evictions over my dogs. The first
1 is gone. I risked eviction, but would not give the dogs up. I
have taken dogs away (stolen ) them from drunks in the park. The
dogs were wandering around in the street. I have taken (stolen)
cats from Greek diners...whose cats were also CROSSING the street
in traffic. I have picked up over 80 cats and found homes for
half...kept the other half...not all at the same time....I spent
ALL my $$$ on vet bills..the vets here are very expensive... I
never buy anything for myself...get clothes (hand me downs) from
my clients & neighbors..and it's fine by me!!!
However, I offerred to reimburse the
$50 pound fee, if anyone would have pulled a dog out from the
Lisbon pound, and no one did. That's when I lost it, and posted
the rant///NOT MEANT FOR YOU, or any of the OHIO rescue workers.
I am on your side!! I am trying to help, and I thought the rant
would be read by the bastards who are the cause of the problem,
not by those who are trying to solve it!! I want to help, but
cannot come to OHIO... Cannot leave my dog. Take her w/ me
everywhere...bottom line:
Need me to try to help, I will. Don't
take offense. I did not mean to insult YOU.. Heard from a woman,
Rhea Akers ..who does Shepherd rescue and is in trouble..do you
know her ??? Please RSVP, if you do. I want to send her some $$--
she is in bad shape..I would appreciate any info if you know her.
AlI can do is hope that your life will get easier. What you do is
wonderful! Thanks on behalf of the animals. For whatever it's
worth, thanks, from me, too
Katia Ferrari Grossman. 62 yrs
old..but i ain't ready to give up!!
Hallejah!
Someone has finally spoken up for all the animals in Ohio. I wish it
had been me but I do have an excuse. Every time that I have tried to
adopt an animal out of Ohio I have met with such negativity that I
have given up. I decided that Ohio doesn't give a shit....they would
rather gas them than adopt them out. I literally BEGGED one shelter
for a senior lady named Babe.....and while I was begging them to
please give me a chance to drive, just 3 lousy days, to Ohio to adopt
her and get her out of there - THEY GASSED HER!!!! After that
experience I gave up since it was the 3rd time that I had tried to
adopt an animal from an Ohio Shelter. Too bad, Ohio, I've adopted out
of WV and CA......those states have even bent over backwards to help
me!

Is anybody in OHIO still awake?? NYC wants to ask you something (NYC)
Are there NO compassionate dog lovers in your state?? I posted in the
3
cities on CL re: the GASSING of dogs that will take place tomorrow at
7 am
in 2 of your counties..Columbiana...and Scioto,in the county
pounds..Lisbon & Portsmouth..I am a rescue worker, communicating w/
rescue workers all over this country...As of now..a few hrs before
innocent , owner surrendered pets are going to be EXECUTED..no one
..in either Columbiana Co. or Scioto co...has gone to either pound to
pull out a dog!!!
There's something wrong, when not 1 person, out of a state as large as
yours has any sensitivity!!
You are comfortable w/ the thought that dogs & cats are thrown into
gas
chambers... to die a long, atrocious, terrifying death... by choking,
coughing and ultimately vomiting their lungs out!! Got no heart in
OHIO??? Are you all so self absorbed that you don't give a shit about
the plight of those innocent creatures... PUPPIES... who will be
executed??
Serial killers get better treatment than you are giving to your stray
animals !!
WAKE UP... OHIO...You need to get in touch w/ your conscience... Your
state is an embarrassment to the rest of us...We don't GAS animals in
shelters up here...We DO have to euthanize... that means MERCY
KILLING...sorry...throwing abandoned pets into GAS Chambers is NOT Mercy
Killing! But it doesn't seem to bother you!!
If any BREEDERS are reading this..GO TO HELL...You will soon stop
"breeding." YOU are the root of this problem..We are all going to
blast the media and expose you ..soon BREEDING will be illegal in the
USA and you will be subjected to heavy duty fines!!!...and the rest of
you..who have
dogs and cats and don't SPAY or Neuter them..exacerbate the
problem..that means ..you're adding to the problem.. Animals have
feelings, too..why don't you go the pounds and watch the them die,
tomorrow AM....then maybe you'll DO SOMETHING..LIKE contact your state
representatives & protest ..or maybe you're all so indifferent that
you DON'T VOTE!!.. This barbaric torture of domestic animals puts you
on a par w/ the Greeks..who just killed 30,000 dogs in their streets
by POISONING them !! Do you read newspapers??
Take responsibility....stop the cruelty...YOU CAN'T ALL BE CALLOUS..or
maybe you ARE!!! Where's the GAY Community...how come no lesbians or
gays are adopting from the pounds?? They're allegedly animal
lovers...at least up here!!!
Animal rescue workers from the NORTH have this to say : SHAME ON YOU!!

Reagan is a super sweet female Cattle Dog who is due to be gassed in
the next couple of days, as the pound is full. She gets along very
well with other dogs, and is very gentle.
Please, if anyone can help Reagan, contact the Guernsey County, Ohio,
dog pound at 740-432-2219. Reagan's photos are attached below.

If you can help this
dog or would like more info about him, please contact the kind
hearted Vet that saved his life. His name is Dr. Poorman, at the
PetPlex animal hospital. The number is: 740-929-3300.
PLEASE CROSSPOST TO SENIOR RESCUES.....
This poor little guy needs a home desperately. His life till now
has been terribly sad. He was brought to the pound to be gassed by
some idiot that had him in the trunk of her car on a hot day!!!!
A few more minutes & gassing him wouldn't have been an issue as
he would have died in that hot trunk. He was terribly matted and
uncared for - a pathetic little old dog as climbed panting &
staggering out of that trunk. A local rescue took him home to
evaluate him and try to clean him up some, they decided that with
his general condition, it was probably best to humanely euthanize
him. Well, the kind hearted vet that they took him to couldn't do
it & asked if they minded if he tried to save him.... of course
that was wonderful news!! So, long story short, after years of
absolutely no care, the old guy was infested with hookworms, etc.,
and just needed a LOT of TLC & help from the vet. He has come a
long way!!! The vet says he thinks he is about 8 years old, his
overall health is now ok, his teeth aren't too bad, he is getting
his strength and trusting of humans back (he also must have been
terribly abused as you could barely touch him), his vision isn't
the best, but he can see treats as you can tell from one of these
pics... He is now ready to go to preferably a new forever home or
maybe a qualified senior rescue that could place him where the
rest of his life could be lived out in happiness & love which he
so much deserves. The poor old soul is still at the vet's
office and needs out as soon as possible, if you can help him, or
would like more info about him, please contact the kind hearted
vet that saved his life. His name is Dr. Poorman/PetPlex animal
hospital.The number
is:740-929-3300.
StopTheSuffering will try to help with
transport if needed...

EMACIATED SCARED SWEET HOUND LICKING
# 1328
8 MONTHS OLD MALE
SWEET HOUND
This boy is so skinny, he must not have eaten for weeks. He is so
restless in
the kennel, scared but wags his tail I gave him a cookie and he ate it
all.
He needs a second chance, he needs a home with a family that loves
him/he
needs to trust, he needs TLC, he needs YOU!!! NOT THE GAS CHAMBER!!!!
He is available 8/15.
He is not big, 40 lbs.tall and maybe 20 lbs weight
Received a call from a gentleman in the Cleveland area. He has a
stray that he cannot keep. Dave says that this dog is emaciated. He's
been feeding and now has her in his back yard. The dog is a young
(probably under a year) female. Very friendly with children and other
pets. Might have Pitbull in her. Possibly 55 lbs at full weight, lt
brown with a black muzzle. He's tracked down the owner but due to it's
size he knows they won't admit it's theirs. Dave does not want to take
to a shelter because he figures she'll just be put down since she has
some pit in her.
If anyone can help this nice man, please call Dave at 216-671-8065.

They are very eager to
help. Here is a statement or two from last month's event:
"I couldn't believe the number of people that showed up. We were steady
with crowds from 1-4. There were several that showed up before we even
to start. We also had a jar full of donations! Normally when we go to
rescue events, we are lucky to get one donation. There were people that
showed up just to stop in and thank rescuers for what they were doing
and were going around giving donations. The people were real friendly
and very excited that we were all there. I had from many people they
were glad that Lancaster finally had something going in their area. I
was just amazed at the towns people who were so excited. WOW!!"
"Lancaster Animal Fair was a success today! We had a good turn out and
to my surprise, these people really were hoping for something like this
in that area. Next month will be better and the next month even
better!!! So many that were suppose to be here did not come but we had
5 rescues show up. I myself got about 10 applications and many people to
call or they will be calling me. For the first time since I have been
doing adoption events, I got donations! This is a real plus! For me,
this event was a complete success and can't wait for the next one to
come along. I have apps on the two dogs I took with me and on a dog that
was home. So out of all of this, two will probably be definitely adopted
out which is good! Next month I will take more with me if I have
them!!!!
We do have some others very interested in joining us and looking forward
to hearing from them but all in all, it was a good day!! Everyone had
more than enough room to spread out!!! More room is available! We could
probably set up 40 - 50 rescues or more in the area's that are available
to us. We have electric available, bathroom available and just a
wonderful place to have an adoption event! It is great to know that we
have wonderful neighbors that do care about animals. We are looking at
this to grow and grow to eventually a very large event! I talked to
many people today and they plan on attending next months also to see who
and what is new!"
You will need to bring your own tables, chairs, tents, and anything you
wish to bring to sell to help raise money for your group. You will need
to make sure you bring water for your animals since we are in the warm
summer months.
ALL animals must be current on all vaccines and neutered or spayed. We
ask that all animals brought to the event by a rescue group be kept
under control, well behaved, groomed, etc.
There is a non-refundable $15 per event setup fee to help cover the cost
of the fairgrounds. The fee must be paid at least one week prior to the
event. There is a one-time application/agreement that will need to be
filled out for each rescue/vendor attending. The fairgrounds have been
reserved through September and then a decision will be made whether to
change the day of the event, etc.
If you are interested in attending in this event, please email Linda
Simmons (pomlvr@wowway.com) or

to receive your application/agreement and for

Hello all, Please crosspost
Please see the attached e-mail. For those of you who
like hound mixes, there is a really nice looking hound mix (Bruzer).
There are also black labs(one that has an injured eye that has been
there way too long), 7yr old yellow lab mix (lady), a yellow lab/golden
mix, plus regular gsd and white gsd's, collie mix and many many more.
Please take a look at the large dogs, they are always the ones to get
picked last. If you can even take a medium size dog, it will open up a
run for a large one.
http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/OH177.html
Contact Pat Walter (pwalter@sixdogstudio.com
or rescue@hsov.org), who has been
cc'd on this e-mail, if you can even help just one. Thanks for looking.
Hi Chaundel
We are really full in the back room
with our large dogs. We have managed to get some adopted, but could
use some help in getting a few to rescue.
I will be working on getting more
photos up on Petfinder tomorrow. We have some new photos up, but have
been so busy going on Meet and Greets that I haven't had much time to
take photos.
If you know of anyone that can help
us, I would appreciate it. We have a big large black lab, an aussie
that is pretty but has no training, several huskies, a german shepherd
and a whole bunch of others.
Let me know if you can find us any
help.
Thanks
Pat

Best Friend Forgotten:
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Homeless Animals
in America
It stars a lovable dog named Clover and an adorable cat called Oreo, it's
hosted by David Duchovny of X- Files fame, and it could be coming to
a station near you. Best Friend Forgotten, a compelling documentary that
follows Clover and Oreo through two different U.S. shelters, is
slated to air on PBS this fall. But the film needs your help to
ensure that its important message reaches your community.
Directed by
American filmmaker Julie Lofton, Best Friend Forgotten takes a
behind-the-scenes look at the crisis of pet overpopulation. The
statistics are staggering: in every community in America, dogs and
cats by the hundreds and thousands are left homeless through no
fault of their own.
Only a
fraction of these hopeful animals find good homes.
Clover and Oreo are two such hopefuls, examples of the kinds of
highly adoptable pets that make their way into U.S. shelters every
day. Clover was taken in from the streets of Los Angeles while Oreo
was found in a Chicago tenement building. After being rescued by
animal control officers, each is taken to a local shelter.
Once there, Clover and Oreo face a heartbreaking reality-less than
half of the 6-8 million animals that enter U.S. shelters each year
are adopted. This is not for a lack of trying. "Animal shelters
provide care and, whenever possible, loving homes for homeless pets.
Too often, they must instead provide a humane death. Due to a lack
of appropriate resources, a shortage of families looking to adopt, a
constant influx of unwanted animals from the community and a lack of
targeted spay and neuter programs, millions of innocent animals are
euthanized annually," says Kate Pullen, The HSUS's Director of
Animal Sheltering.
This
tragedy, however, is completely preventable. But only if people
become aware of the crisis. Lofton, a former stand-up comedian,
decided to get serious about the problem of pet overpopulation after
volunteering at a Los Angeles shelter where she saw countless
animals euthanized because the shelter was overcrowded. "The plague
of pet overpopulation is invisible to most people, and this movie
will bring it home to them," Lofton said. The film helps to
spread the word by educating viewers and inspiring them to take
action. According to a press release, Lofton's said, "My hope is
that this movie will motivate people to go to their local shelter
and take home a loving animal companion. For those who have dogs and
cats at home, I hope the film will encourage them to spay and neuter
their pets."
Several
celebrities have lent their support to the project. Duchovny, most
famous for his role as Fox Mulder on the X-Files series, hosts the
documentary, while Peter Gabriel, former member of the band Genesis,
has called the film "a brilliant documentary that needs to be seen
by anyone who loves animals." Despite Gabriel's rave, there's
no guarantee that Best Friend Forgotten will be seen in your area.
Local PBS stations have the option to add this documentary to their
fall line-up, since each station creates its own schedule based its
community's needs. In other words, it's up to the public to help
ensure that this film is shown nationwide.
The HSUS
and shelters around the country are asking animal lovers to call,
write or e-mail their local PBS station by July 23, 2004 to request
that Best Friend Forgotten be added to the fall line-up of programs.
By the end of July, local PBS stations will have made their final
decisions for the October line-up, so it's important to take action
now.
Animal
lovers should also request that the film be aired during the last week of
October during prime viewing hours to help kick off National Animal
Shelter Appreciation Week, which is sponsored by The HSUS and
planned for the first week of November. This week recognizes the
indispensable role that all animal shelters play in maintaining the
safety and health of a community, on behalf of all its residents.
Spread the
word about pet overpopulation! Follow these four easy steps to
help ensure that Best Friend Forgotten's critical message reaches
your community: Step 1: Find your local station using the PBS
Station Finder
http://www.pbs.org/stationfinder/index.html
Step 2: Note your station's address, e-mail address or phone number.
Step 3: Write, call or e-mail your station by July 23, 2004. Writers can
download our customizable letter. [
http://files.hsus.org/web- files/PDF/Letter_to_PBS_public.pdf ]
Step 4: Pass this article on and encourage your friends and family to take
action!

my name is Tara and i run a
very small new rescue out of Hamilton, OH i just wanted to say hello
and offer my assistance in the greater cincinnati, dayton, middletown
area. i specialize in german shepherds but i also have
experiance
pomeranians,chihuahua's and dobermans.
i am seeking to create a good contact list for future use along with
offering assistance with small transports, fostering(short term/ long
term/overnight and home visits. i may also consider some light pet
sitting during the week for anyone in my area who works and dont want
their pets left alone.
my only vice is that the dogs be dog and kid friendly and housebroken
and that the owners bring their own food just in case of
allergic reactions. and a copy of any medical info on the dog as
well as vet contacts incase of emergencies and contact info for the
owner as well.
let me know if i can help out in anyway.

Dear Friends:
What's really going on in Ohio? We all know the citizens aren't
behind the inhumane practices happening with Ohio's animal
population: the gassing, the brutal events occurring there.
Columbiana, for instance, gassing animals every Tuesday - whether
the pound is full or not! Pike seems to be running a CIRCUS instead
of an animal shelter and LORAIN isn't much better!
-
The Witness
By Jerry Elmore Layne (of Animals Have
Hearts, Too!)
A personal transformation took over my life in 1988, when I was a
witness, through a small porthole window, of an animal shelter gas
chamber doing its savage business.
Two of the employees began pulling and tugging larger dogs toward
the chamber -- this, in itself, was savage. The eyes of the dogs were
full of fear as they were shoved into a large cylinder with another
six dogs, all types. Next, five puppies were placed in the chamber.
Noise. Yelling. Fighting. All scared, they shivered again and
again, their eyes huge, their nostrils flaring. They were completely
bewildered. One dog in the chamber, a male chow mix about one year
old, started snapping at the puppies. All the dogs and puppies were in
a desperate struggle, and the gassing had yet to begin.
Then a button was pushed, and the two employees walked away as the
chamber machine began pumping out streams of carbon monoxide. The
little puppies started to paw at the glass window. After one full
minute they started to whine and then produced a piercing squeal. Then
the larger dogs started a high, mournful wailing, then a deeper howl
that rose in great desperation for 45 seconds.
That morning of my witness, the time from inception of hell for the
dogs and puppies, to the completion of their cries of desperation, was
between two and six minutes.
As the employees walked away, I knew it was my love, my honor, my
devotion to animals that I must not blink and watch every second,
every animal struggle to avoid death. However, tears from my heart did
overwhelm me that tragic morning, and the final insult was having to
load the bodies of the dogs and puppies into a pickup truck and haul
them to a local garbage dump.
