It happened Tuesday night in north Columbus when the gunman tried to rob a woman at the motel where she was staying.
Hunter demonstrates you dont have to be human to be a hero.
Wednesday night, the loyal pet was still clinging to life.
Veterinarians at a north side animal hospital were doing everything in their power to save the dog, whose pain and suffering was clearly evident from his whines and moans.
He was protecting his owner and did a wonderful job of doing that, one veterinarian observed.
On Wednesday, Thompson saw Hunter for the first time since their lives simultaneously changed.
I want to take him home. I miss him, Melodie Thompson said tearfully.
The day before, a man attacked Thompson as she was entering her motel room.
"I didn't notice the gun. He asked me for money. I told him I don't have any money! There's no money here," Thompson said.
He pointed the gun at me. I didn't think about the dog.
But Hunter was clearly thinking about her.
"He comes running, charging at the guy. He fired three times.
Hunter was badly wounded. He was rushed to MedVet, an animal hospital in Worthington.
"Oh, it takes my breath away," Thompson said of seeing her dog suffering.
Hunter was shot in two legs and shot in the back, with a bullet lodged precariously close to his spine. Veterinarians say Hunter has nerve damage and may never walk again.
Despite the prognosis and excruciating pain, the resilient Rottweiler managed a simple yet powerful gesture for his owner.
Hunter wagged his tail.
He's crying, Thompson said. You're coming home soon. Going to be okay."
Police were still searching for the gunman Wednesday night.
As for Hunter, he was undergoing surgery Thursday -- a surgery his owners say they can't afford.
Anyone who would like to donate to help cover the veterinarian bills can contact MedVet at 300 East Wilson Bridge Road , Worthington , Ohio 43085 .
The phone number there is 614-846-5800, and the fax number is 614-846-5803.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE CROSSPOST
THIS EXTREMELY URGENT MESSAGE!
Talk about a sweetheart of a vet - My vet's partner just called me. A "client"
just brought in the sweetest, most adorable Black Lab Type, just a 6
month old female, with a rope so embedded in her neck that it is down to
her trachea! He told me he will begin to perform the surgery right away, but
wants a guarantee from me that I will come up with a foster home by
tomorrow...if the dog survives! I told him I'd get one; but where???? HE
IS NOT CHARGING FOR THIS $500. OPERATION!
HE WILL ALSO GIVE HER HER SHOTS, BUT SHE IS NOT IN ANY CONDITION TO BE SPAYED YET. SHE IS ALSO EMACIATED. This is an easy dog for me to place in a permanent home, however as you all know we have NO foster homes, no safe havens, nothing up here but heartache.
PLEASE, SOMEONE TAKE IN THIS DARLING GIRL IF HER SURGERY TO REMOVE THE EMBEDDED ROPE IS A SUCCESS.
I will do all I can to find her a permanent home from there. HURRY, WE DON'T
WANT HER PUT DOWN!

Kitten thrown out of car faces surgery, reward
offered PORTLAND, Ore. - Witnesses say someone tossed two kittens from a car
window while driving on Portland's Fremont Bridge. One kitten, a male, was
brought into Dove Lewis Animal Hospital last night at about 6 p.m.
Hospital officials say he had scraped toes and some soft-tissue damage.
The second kitten was brought in this morning, covered with fleas, cigarette
butts and gravel. Doctors say that female kitten is in critical condition.
"She has had a little bit of head trauma, but she is responsive and doesn't have
any neurologic deficits," said a veterinarian from Dove Lewis Emergency Animal
Hospital. " Still she has a guarded prognosis now because her blood
pressure is still very low and we need to get her more stable before
surgery." A witness said the vehicle was a red, older model car that may
be a hatchback. "Just as I was picking her up she started to move her head
just a little bit so I brought her to Dove Lewis immediately," said
eyewitness Jennifer Smieja. Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital,
http://www.dovelewis.org 503-228-7281
said they are offering a $500 reward for information
leading to an arrest of the person or people responsible.

Subject: EMERGENCY: Dog Hit By Car VERY Short on Time
Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 09:29:54 -0500
TIME CRITICAL FOR CHOCOLATE LAB MIX HIT BY CAR ON 7/19/04 -- ONLY HAS
TODAY, 7/20/04, BEFORE BEING PUT DOWN
On the way home from work yesterday, I stopped to check on the "status" of a
dog on Tidwell @ Langfield that had been hit by a car and was laying in the
middle of the road. To my horror, I discovered he was still alive and
conscious, as rush-hour traffic zoomed by him non-stop! Let me tell you, I
am amazed at how heartless and insensitive people are. Not one person
stopped to help, despite my pleas, nor did most even slow down, even when I
was standing there with the dog in the middle of the road! Finally, with
the help of a young man, we were able to get the dog in my car and I rushed
him off to Forest West Animal Clinic.
Dr. Tinkey agreed to give me the evening to get signs out trying to contact
the owner before putting the dog down, since it was not possible for me to
cover the cost of care at the emergency clinic or the $200 it would have
cost for Doc Tinkey to run x-rays, start an IV, start treatment. I agreed
to basic, humane care overnight - exam, IV, pain medication, etc. To date,
9:15 a.m. on 7/20, no one has called. Doc just called and said the dog made
it through the night and looks much better, shock has subsided, breathing
easier. But he wants to know what I want to do if the owners don't come
forward today.
I'M SENDING THIS OUT BECAUSE I HAVE TO AT LEAST TRY TO DO SOMETHING ON THE
DOG'S BEHALF, BEFORE ALLOWING HIM TO BE PUT DOWN. I cannot afford the vet
care required for this dog, nor could I bring him home with me, as you may
remember me as being the one who recently added numbers 9 and 10 to my
household. It absolutely breaks my heart for this beautiful dog to be put
down because of these unfortunate circumstances, esp. when he probably isn't
critically injured. Doc says he doesn't see life-threatening injuries
(without doing x-rays), however, he does have some head trauma, back leg
can't bear weight, numerous cuts and abrasions, can't be sure what all the
vet said.
We have what appears to be a chocolate lab mix, male, unneutered, 45 lbs,
wearing black leather collar with silver studs but no tags. Appears to be
well-kept, shiny coat, etc.
IF YOU CAN HELP AT ALL, PLEASE CONTACT ME, CINDI, AT 713-248-2653 or FOREST
WEST ANIMAL CLINIC, DR. TINKEY, AT 713-688-9625. Per Doc Tinkey, there will
be no more medical expenses by leaving him there today, but there will be if
he stays overnight again, plus he needs medical attention.

ROTTIE DISPLAYING PARALYSIS IN REAR LEGS: I received a note from a person that has asked if i would shop around for different estimates on the x-rays and they might be able to help me. Im about to call around right now. Im not sure if you know whats been going on. My dog Lada, up until Sunday was able to walk, she cant use her hind legs. I did take her to a vet and found out her vitals are good but in order to find out whats wrong she needs x-rays. Something i really wish we could afford right now but we just cant and ive applied for credit care and im calling to see if i can find a vet that takes payments. Our credit is really bad and we dont have credit cards. So we have been denied by Credit Care and as i said im looking for a vet to take payments. Lada is trying to crawl around we are discouraging this because she has a small rash on her inner thighs from it and she once in awhile whimpers, im not sure if its from pain or if she is lonely because when i sit near her she stops. Sometimes she just needs water and other times to go outside, she wont do any bowel movements in the house even though we put towels underneath her so we take her outside and we gotten her to there, my husband has been using a towel underneath her to help her get outside. Ive gotten links for places that might help but like imom.org if she isnt diagnosed then they really cant consider helping and i understand the reasoning. I was also sent a link for another place but i have to go to a friends house later today to scan and fax the information they need. And thats pretty much where i am right now.
Thank you for your response and concern
NOTE: This message concerns the injured dog who was rescued from the Carroll County OH Dog Pound last week and had orthopedic surgery. She is doing well, didn't have to lose the leg! She is in foster care. Donations for her medical treatment can be sent to Paws & Prayers Pet Rescue, P.O. Box 2864, Akron, OH 44309 (please mark them "Carroll Dog Surgery"). I don't have a picture or a name for her, yet, but I will pass them on to you when I get them. Thank you so much.
This little gal is in need of some additional funds for the veterinary care she secured for the pup she lost because someone drove off the road to make certain they hit her. The little Beagle was less than one year old. They lack $130.00 to be able to pay the vet and retrieve her body. Please help if you can... 1.888.831.4365 for the Vet's address to send the money.
The vehicles on this road over here travel about 60 to 80 miles per hour when they're only supposed to go 40 to 30...if the cops out here would enforce the speed limit better other dogs would have a better chance I think, except for the fact that one person out there is out to kill dogs by the road...Klowy wasn't even on the road when she got hit the person swerved off the road and hit her....my Mom called the State Police and asked them to come out here and start giving tickets...I hope it works. Before we put Klowy to sleep she had to have surgery to see if they could save her...that's one way they realized they probably couldn't save her back legs or most likely her intestines either. The over night bill and the other bills are outrageous, and we couldn't even save my baby...I raised her from before she was even 6 weeks old...she was rescued from freezing to death. God I'm gonna miss her. Thank you for replying...

PLEASE, IF YOU CAN, HELP SYDNEY,
CONTACT IS: Dkeyez@aol.com (remove 2 spaces)(Dkeyez@aol.com)
Hi; We adopted Sydney a mixed breed female dog that was abused about 7 yrs ago.
She has been a major part of our lives and the most wonderful dog ever. I
can go on and on with stories of this dogs love for us. She has been
everything from homeless with us to birthing kittens all night and helping clean
them...Through everything she has never left our side. So I do not understand why she went into the
road... Last Thursday she was hit by a car. We rushed her to the emergency vet. They x rayed her, She has a broken leg and torn tendons. They stapled the wounds closed that had bone exposed. She needs to go to the vet daily to get them checked, bandages changed and needs surgery. Our problem is funds. I am
unemployed right now and barely making ends meet. I was wondering if you can pleeeease help She has been through a lot in her life and still has the scars on her rear foot from when her foot was severed before we got her. She is an angel
to us and we are trying anything to get the money to make her comfortable. This
dog means the world to us. What she has given us could never be returned.
If there is anyone who helps people out like this, the vet we are going to
use is: BRISTOL VET ASSOCIATION 860- 583- 4641. They can give the funds
directly to them or be sent to my address below. Many, many

PLEASE HELP
"My credit account with my vet has been depleted to where I owe him money now. $540.00 stands between life and death for Foxy Lady". Marion Jacobson is our Chihuahua Lady here in the Frazier Park Area, CA. She has such a kind heart , and has taken in many Chihuahuas from all over, including L.A. and the S.F.Valley - the blind, the deaf, the arthritic, and all the "throwaways". As a result, she can barely feed herself, let alone pay costly vet bills, which she needs for all these special needs dogs. We have all said we could help with medical expenses if she would take them in. She is a wonderful and loving mommy, but she has one dog who will die soon, without our help. I just spoke with Dr. Tim Hare, my vet in San Fernando....where Marion Jacobson took in a little Chihuahua that Kelly Sperber drove up here after someone bailed her out of the Shelter. Her name now is "Foxy Lady". (cannot remember her name before.)
Dr. Hare does NOT want to spay her, because she has a very serious condition
in her mouth and nose - "an oral nasal fistula with a root abscess", and each
time she eats, food gets in there and causes her much pain. Now she has
diarrhea from this infection, and this must be treated IMMEDIATELY, because she
can die from infection. Her potassium level is very high, and Dr. Hare says
she will need an ACTH Stimulating Test whereas he needs to draw blood
first, give her something called Florineff, and then draw the blood again,
to bring her Potassium Level down before doing the surgery.
The high potassium will cause weak muscles including the heart muscle - this is serious! THIS IS WHAT WE NEED IN ORDER FOR FOXY LADY TO LIVE: $100. for her total blood work for the ACTH Stimulating Test 140. for the Florineff injection 300. for her surgery - $540. IS WHAT IS NEED TO KEEP LITTLE FOXY LADY ALIVE. Please, please - she has come so far - don't let her die now!!! If we don't help Marion with some vet bills, she cannot help any more doggies..so in essence we could be saving even more lives! Please make out a check or money order to: RAYning Catts N' Doggs Memo: Foxy Lady Fund and mail ASAP to:

As a rescuer and a private guardian I receive both
"rescue rates" and "pay the full fee" rates. The below costs are true - I just
had to have a full blood work-up on one of my personal dogs - the panel was $98
and the visit was $52.
If you email Joy she can provide vet info.

UPDATE ON OSO THE CHOW
THAT THE OWNER WANTS DEAD
FRAZIER PARK AREA, CA
Because of the time element and the fact that I cannot cause the owner to go
out of her way (for her own dog) I had to make an appointment with the one and
only vet up here for Oso's Exam, Blood Work, and Innoculations. This is
needed to determine whether or not he can be neutered.
Thank goodness we are having a FREE 2 day Spay and Neuter Clinic here next
Saturday and Sunday - 1st time. I am hoping to get Oso in, but because he is a
6 yr. old Chow, needs to have everything in order first. The total bill for
Dr. Cosko will be $191.50; and all my funds are depleted because of Daisy-Mae,
and all the other rescued dogs needing medical care. Any donations will
greatly help this poor unhappy pooch, plus his fur is so matted - down to the
skin, that several groomers refused to touch him. This will also need to be
addressed.
I would so greatly appreciate any amount you can help me with for Oso, the 6
year old Chow. Lynn Brown will be coming up here - 3 1/2 hours away to foster
him. Any amount left over I would like to give to her for her gas and all
the hundreds she recently spent from her pockets in order to save another hard
to place dog named Hanna - Owner also had ordered to be destroyed.
Blood Panel-98.50 Exam = 39.00 Innoculations = $57.00
Total is 191.50 which I do not have.
Neuter is free - hoping to get in.

Subject: I Need the Help of 300 People
Hi Everyone
If the title of this e-mail sounds like deja-vu;
it is. From time to time a rescuer gets into major trouble and we hope the rest
of the community will rally round and help. Most of the time it is a little
known individual who gets in over their head - and although we all sympathize,
they drop out of rescue and are never heard from again.
This time it's different. One of the 'greats' of dog rescue is in a big fix and
I am asking 300 people to help her out.
Jude Fine is 'the' maven of Senior Dog Rescue in North America - she has over
many years single handedly created groups and networks dedicated specifically
to saving older and aged dogs both purebred and not ..and she has done it
brilliantly. Jude has also done what many others have done - put her hard
earned money where her mouth is and as a result, she may literally lose her
home. She is alone in life, teetering on the brink and is scared to death.
Please help her find her footing so that her home and her rescue is saved.
It will mean the lives of hundreds of senior dogs if she cannot continue and I
know we would NEVER let someone as dedicated as she go to the wall. I am asking
300 people to step up to the plate and donate $10. I'm sure many of you will
want to send more but in all honesty there are thousands of rescuers and if just
300 contribute a very small amount, Jude's bacon will be saved.
Please say you will help, not only directly, but also by passing this message
on to the hundreds of rescue and breed lists. If Jude Fine is unknown to you -
ask around. Her reputation is sterling and she is gilt edged.
Thank you for reading. Thank you even more if you decide to help.
PS. If this letter eventually reaches someone not directly involved in dog
rescue, please help anyway. If this letter reaches someone who doesn't even
like dogs, please help anyway - for the sake of a great woman. If this letter
reaches someone who doesn't like great women, consider yourself off the hook.
