BLACKJACK

I am in desparate need of help.  Below is the story of Blackjack, a rescue I found by the side of the interstate in WV several months ago.  I adopted him out to a couple in Virginia, who I interviewed and met with prior to adopting him out.  He has been with them for a couple of months.  I am in Denver for work through the end of July, and they e-mail me saying he killed some chickens on the farm, so they are going to take him to the pound unless I can find him a new home by this weekend (of course they agreed to keep him as an inside dog and did not, but that is another story).  I have posted him on Petfinder and terrificpets, but am terribly afraid I will not be able to find him somewhere to go by this weekend.  If I can get Blackjack to you, is there anyone there who could foster him so he does not have to go to the pound?   Please let me know as soon as possible.  Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer.  Cindy
Hi.  My name is Blackjack.  I am also known as Pepe Le Pu, the handsome cartoon character, because I look like him.  And, "The Wedge" because I like to wedge my little black head up under your arm and put it on your lap.  I am an approximately 1 year old, twenty-six pound male dog who was found by the side of the interstate in West Virginia.  I was in bad shape.  I was full of hookworms, round worms, ringworms, you name it!  I was also very much in need of a bath and some food and water.  I did not have any tags on or a microchip, and I was dumped with another puppy, who was in the same desperate condition I was in.  BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS, my guardian angel, Andy, saw me as he drove by and he stopped to save my buddy and me.  He took us to the vet and the vet gave us all our shots and he neutered me and spayed my buddy.  He gave us medicine so now our worms are all gone.  The vet told my guardian angel that he thought I looked like a miniature black lab, so I would be an outstanding friend for someone who may want a lab, but need a much smaller dog.  The problem my guardian angel has, is that he has three dogs already and he lives in a county that has a two dog per household limit.  If anybody sees my buddy and me I could get Andy in a lot of trouble.  Also, Andy lives right on the road and I am so small that I can get under his picket fence.  So it is hard for Andy to let me out to potty, not only because he worries that someone will see five dogs in his yard, but more importantly, because Andy doesn't want me to get under the fence and into the road.

Let me tell you about my personality.  I am full of happiness, love, and kisses.  My tail constantly wags.  At first, my foster family was very worried for me.  I seemed so scared and would not let them touch me.  When they tried to pick me up I yelped, and when they tried to put a leash on me, it freaked me out and I got really nervous.  I don't have any aggressive tendencies, they were just concerned that I was so shaken up when they approached me.  I would not even take food from my foster mom's hands, even though you could tell I was really hungry.  My foster family was concerned that I may have been abused, but now they just think that I never had any human interaction, that someone kept me outside in a pin and just threw food at me.  They believe I had never been touched, petted, loved or held.  I didn't know what it meant for someone to want me to come to them, and to actually call for me.  And I didn't know how good a belly rub, a pat on the head, or a kiss on my wet nose could feel.  BUT NOW I have experienced all those things and I am thriving on affection!  Mom now picks me up and hugs me, and just carries me around for kicks.  I give her kisses on her ears, neck, and all over her face.  I come running when she calls me name and I love to sit right on her lap and let her pet me for hours on end while we watch tv.  I even take treats right from my foster mom's hands!  I am not at all a pushy dog, but I truly cherish every ounce of affection I get.  So anytime you call for me, I will be there.  I also don't respond well to yelling or hitting, so I need a gentler forever family, who will be calm with me and earn my trust like my foster family did very quickly.

Let me tell you a little bit about my appearance.  My fur is soft and silky, and shiny black, with a white streak on my belly and chest.  I have a nice, shiny healthy coat and a tail that looks like a plume.  I have dark, sensitive, expressive eyes.  I sleep in a crate at night and I am well on my way to being housetrained.  I love treats in all shapes and sizes, and I am a good eater of dry dog food (Eukanuba puppy food).  I am excellent with other dogs.  I have lived with three big dogs, and my fellow abandoned buddy is a puppy about fifteen pounds lighter than me.  We all get along great.  I especially like to kiss my big Weimaraner brother and to try to play tug of war with him, although he is much bigger than me.  He humors me and lets me try.   I would be excellent with calmer children, as I am not at all aggressive and am very gentle when I play.  I would also be ideal for a one person home, as I am a one-person kind of dog.  I love toys and babies (fluffy stuffed animals for dogs that squeak) and I would make some lucky person the best friend in the world.  I am a pretty quiet dog.  I don't hardly ever bark nor growl.  I am just content to be inside and to get some affection for the first time in my life.  As you can see from my pictures, I am also very handsome.  My foster mommy says I have the most gorgeous shiny black coat she has ever seen.  It is straight and thick and of medium length.  I have big black paws, but my legs are not very long.  The vet does not think I will get much bigger than my current twenty-six pounds.

I am staying in Virginia with a foster family for now, but I really need to find a loving forever home asap.  I am an inside dog and I have a fenced in yard.  Since I am used to this, I would like to keep the same.  I do get up on the couch and on the furniture with my foster family and I eat treats from their hands.  I would really like a home where I could continue being treated as an equal member of the family, not ties or left outside where no one could cuddle with me.  If you are interested in adopting me, or if you are a rescue that can help me out with a foster family and then an adoptive family, please contact my friend Cindy at
cindykiblinger@aol.com.  If you want to see additional pictures of me, please let Andy or Cindy know, as they have taken a million of me!  I am  located in Virginia.

P.S.  We recently learned that I chase chickens, so if you have chickens I probably would not be a fit for your home.

Thanks very much for taking the time to read my story.  Please let my guardian angels know if you can help me find the wonderful foster or permanent family I deserve!  Love, Blackjack
