Plsssssss crosspost! Fw: NY - Chase
Abused BC/ACD has 6 days left!!!!!
Can anyone help this guy???
gisella --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Adrienne Caldwell adrienne.caldwell@verizon.net (@verizon.net) Hi Everyone.
Below is a history of my posts
about Chase the abused BC in reverse order.
He now has only six days
left. I am concerned that all of our efforts so far on his behalf will
be in vain. I have contacted every BC rescue on the East Coast and
while they are empathetic to his predicament they understandably do not
have room for a dog with issues such as his.
He had a promising adoption prospect from a highly experienced vet tech in La. but it seems she is having second thoughts. Because of the prospect in La. he was transfered to a NJ rescue until the transport could be arranged. Now it looks like there will be no transport as poor Chase has run out of options. Unless something miraculous occurs I will have no choice but to make a trip to NJ to end his suffering as he has nowhere to go. This will be the first time I have to do this but I at least owe him my farewell and the respect to be there. Please someone help poor Chase. There must be someone for him. Look at his progress in the photo below. Was that the last love he will receive on this earth? I unfortunately have been unable to honor requests for photos as my schedule and the schedule of the trainer holding him conflict. I contacted Mt. Vernon shelter and they already deleted all his photos. The rescue person holding him is now leaving to go home for the holidays. Chase has nowhere to go. He has such a will to live. Here is his latest update along with my original plea. Hopefully someone can give him a chance. Chase is fairly high energy, but can calm down and relax in my apartment. He is very very wary and nervous. For example, if you open his kennel and call him over to play with you, he is eager to play but curls up on his back and sort of freezes. he's definitely a cuddley dog, just apprehensive at times. he is fine with my other puppy, I wouldnt let them play unsupervised, but like most dogs with her, he mainly is trying to get her to settle down and behave with a little manners (she's very much a typical crazy puppy that drive older dogs nuts). he's aproximately 3 years old (give or take a little), up-to-date on vaccinations (as far as I know according to mt. vernon animal shelter) and is neutered. I live in NYC and have had little to no trouble with other dogs and him. I walk him on a gentle leader (which he's not always thrilled about, but will wear and walk on a loose leash quite easily). I don't let my fosters play with strange dogs on the street becuase I dont know how they will react, but I have only seen 1 or 2 occasions of uncomfortable greetings... both were the other dog getting upset with him (pretty typcial of my neighaborhood dogs). He loves cheese and hotdogs and will take those out of my hand as treats, he knows "sit" "paw" and will down for a treat. all of these someone else definitely taught him. He's not interested in getting into the bathtub, but handles water being poured onto him for a bath. he's completely housebroken and is create trained. Issues seem to be cenetered around new people coming to the house and people knocking at the door. he gets very agitated - growling and barking - and if he's kenneled he'll snapp and snarl at the kennel door. He's all talk and no action as of yet with me. He doesn't like when i close his kennel door, so right now the only time he gets any food is when i'm putting him away in his kennel. This way he's (hopefully) learning that this is a positive thing, but without food or some distraction he will snarl and bear his teeth at me when i try and close the door. Typical herding behavior - trying to push me around, but he has never tried to bite me, or even placed his teeth in warning. He just seems to get really vocal. As far as how he's gonna ge along with other dogs I think really depends on the other dog. He is excellent at giving signals, he's not one of those dogs that has been corrected out of warning signs. So he'd need a dog that was able to read him a little and give him space when he wanted it. He loves to run, chase, fetch, etc. he's really fun to play with outside and does pretty well on a 30' leash outside. I haven't done any off leash play (just because I'm getting nervous). I can't hang on to him over the holidays so I'm looking to plase him ASAP. I'm doing a lot of traveling and just really can't. Please let me know what you're thinking, otherwise I'm taking him up to Mt. Vernon (maybe they'll hold him for the holidays and give him to this friend of yours afterward). Hope all is well with you. Julie Hi Everyone. Another trainer and I are trying to save an abused border collie named Chase from having to be PTS. The shelter where the dog was staying was going to put him down. He has territory issues that would best be managed with an experienced handler familiar with the breed. This dog CANNOT be adopted out. Maybe a BC rescuer who is familiar with this issue. Maybe a job and herding activities would do the trick. He is also food aggressive and should not be feed with a bowl but be hand feed to work on the issue. We were safely feeding him hot dog pieces by hand today. He is not food motivated unless it is hot dog pieces. He is very confused. He wants to trust but has been very abused. I have successfully worked through this before but do not have the room. I am sending out this last hope. He was going to be put down so another trainer and I took him to test him a little more and see if we could figure him out. Now he is very temporarily in an apartment with an EXTREMELY EXPERIENCED handler. He lived without incident at a home for the past three months, but was suddenely returned because he won't let people in the house. If anyone can or knows of someone who can help please e-mail me at: adrienne.caldwell@verizon.net or call me at (718) 441-3564. I can arrange a transport anywhere in the US if you know anyone who could help (the first below is from the trainer boarding Chase at this time) - *(Do you know anyone who would be supportive of his hearding instincts and potentially interested in taking him? i'm need to start being more serious about finding something for him - he really would probably be a fantastichearder, and in a farm-like situation i think he'd flourish. let me know what you think,)* And follows is the newest update - *(I'm willing to drive this dog anywhere - he's totally housebroken, and with a little work, he's very accepting of new people (even men). If left to his own fears/insecurities, he is very defensive and doesn't want people near him. i've been too nervous to do much care with him... he wont let me pick him up to put him in the bath tub and he wouldn't go in (even for hot dogs) so he's only been toweled off... i also haven't touched his nails or teeth... i feel we need to develop more trust together before i start that. i'm tempted to start with the teeth, but i'll let you know how it goes. I'm very interested in someone else (especially with experience handling his problems) taking over. let me know - feel free to pass along my email/phone number. thanks for all your efforts!! I hope something works out for this guy.
Julie)*
Again the dog can only be released to an experienced handler familiar with the breed and abuse related aggression. Adrienne http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2pddb/ http://www.quitbuddies.org/Rescue2.html http://www.animalalliancenyc.org/newsletter/04-11/success.htm

Correspondents, writers, photo-graphers, liaisons, advocates and MORE Needed! There are a myriad of positions available for many different agencies throughout the U.S. There is a great need for shelter workers and volunteers, liaisons, political activists, campaigners, publicists and press people, photographers, correspondents and, yes, transporters! Most of these positions are not, in and of themselves, demanding. Of course, if you care about animals they can become very time consuming efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and varied talents of those who are doing this work -- many out of the kindness of their hearts. If you are interested in volunteering for this effort or others, we invite you to write us and let us know what you'd like to do, how often and how you like to work. We're sure to be able to find a match for you! We thank God for each and every one of you who care enough to confront almost insurmountable odds to do everything you can to change this travesty in our world, often facing your own humanity to do so, and putting your own emotions on the line to care for the voiceless among us: GODSPEED to each and every one... |
