Citizens for a Humane Los Angeles to Sponsor Mayoral Convention; The
Unprecedented Political Convention for Animal Advocates Will Take Place on  Sunday,
January 9, 2005

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2005--
Senator Richard Alarcon,  Robert Hertzberg, Walter Moore and Councilman
Antonio Villaraigosa Will Seek  Support

Citizens for a Humane Los Angeles (CHULA) will sponsor the first political
convention for animal advocates ever held in the United States on Sunday,
January 9, 2005, 10 a.m., at Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn, 4222 Vineland Avenue
in North Hollywood.

CHULA is a coalition of rescuers and others who advocate for the welfare,
rights and protection of animals. Its Mayoral Convention will take place in
anticipation of the March 8 Primary Election, when Los Angeles voters will
choose their next mayor. Candidates participating in the convention include  State
Senator Richard Alarcon, former California State Assembly Speaker Robert
Hertzberg, Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa and attorney Walter Moore.

"The time is long overdue to recognize the power of the Humane Vote," says
Rich McLellan, MD, Director of the Animal Legislative Action Network, a
political action committee that supports "animal-friendly" candidates and
legislation. "Thousands, perhaps millions, of people in Los Angeles care deeply  about
the welfare of animals. We realize that the only way to make enduring  changes
to end their suffering is through the political process."

McLellan described the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services as
"antiquated." The beleaguered department has been the target of criticism by  animal
activists for poor management, and for its use of killing as a means of  animal
control. Every year, more than 34,000 unwanted dogs and cats in the  city's
shelters are destroyed.

On January 9, each mayoral candidate will have one half hour to discuss
their platforms on issues including abandoned and unwanted companion animals,
killing as a means of animal control, spay and neuter programs, feral cats, the
prosecution of animal cruelty cases and human and wildlife co-existence in
urban  settings. Following debate, the convention will then endorse one candidate
by a  plurality of their vote.

"We know that every candidate will address the issues of crime, traffic and
the airport," says Scott Sorrentino, President and Co-Founder of the Rescue
and  Humane Alliance Los Angeles, a public policy advocacy organization
representing  more than 45 groups. "The question is, who is going to address issues of
concern  to the humane community? The animals can't vote. They are counting
on us to  choose a Mayor who will lead Los Angeles into the 21st century of
animal care  and control. The convention will help us to determine which
candidate has a  clear, humane vision for this city."

One third of the companion animals in the city's shelters are abandoned and
unwanted purebreds. Sherrie Woodbury, President of Little Angels Pug Rescue, a
Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization that rescues 20 to 30 pug dogs each
month, will also be at the Mayoral Convention.

"One of the most frustrating things about day-to-day rescue work is that
there are no long-term attempts to address the problems of homeless animals,"
says Woodbury. "Rescuers who think that they don't need to work steadfastly in
the political process are rescuers who don't want to retire."

Woodbury compares the humane community to the many voting blocs that have
promoted their interests through the electoral process for hundreds of years.

"People who are owned and loved by animal companions are a large population
represented by many groups throughout Los Angeles," says Woodbury. "Our hope
now  is for the Humane Vote to unite all of us."

The Citizens for a Humane Los Angeles Mayoral Convention will be held on
Sunday, January 9, beginning at 10 a.m., at Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn, 4222
Vineland Avenue, North Hollywood, California.

Hey Everyone,

We need your help to speak on behalf of chickens being tortured by KFC!

On Saturday, January 8th at 11:00 am, please join Lupus and PETA to protest KFC at 28th and Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica, CA. For more information, please contact Lupus at lupus@ecoisp.com or 818-915-5164. Come out and show people that the secret in KFC's secret recipe is the torture of millions of chickens.

KFC is responsible for slitting conscious birds’ throats open, and scalding them while they’re still alive. They cut the beaks off of mother hens without pain killers and drug their chickens with antibiotics to keep them alive through conditions that would otherwise kill them. Please join our worldwide campaign against KFC by attending this protest.

You can visit www.KentuckyFriedCruelty.com for more information.

Thanks for all of your help!

For Animal Rights,
Joe

Please cross post to people who might be interested in attending or other yahoogroups involving animal shelters in Southern CA (greater LA area).  From Michael Bell (mbell529@aol.com)

To all my friends who have pets, and have shown over the years a more then passing interest in animal welfare, and those rescuers who I know personally (and those I have never met, but have sometimes successfully helped provide funding for) THIS IS THE OPPORTUNITY THE MEMBERS OF THE HUMANE COMMUNITY HAVE BEEN FIGHTING TO ACHIEVE FOR YEARS. WE HAVE FINALLY CAPTURED THE ATTENTION OF THE CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR MAYOR OF LOS ANGELES.

WE MUST TURN OUT IN HUGH NUMBERS FOR THIS CONVENTION SO THEY WILL SEE FOR THEMSELVES THAT WE ARE A SERIOUS COALITION WITH LONG SUFFERING ANIMAL ISSUES THAT MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED AND DEALT WITH.

MANY YEARS AGO, THEN COUNCILWOMAN RUTH GALANTER TOLD ME THAT "IF WE STOPPED INFIGHTING AND REALLY FORMED A POLITICAL COALITION, WE WOULD BE THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THIS CITY, " WE HAVE FINALLY REACHED THAT POINT.

IT IS NOW UP TO YOU TO TAKE US OVER THE TOP.YOU MUST ATTEND THIS MOST MOMENTOUS CONVENTION AND SPEAK YOUR PIECE.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CONTACT SCOTT SORRENTINO AT phantom.rescuer@earthlink.net AND LET HIM KNOW YOU WILL BE THERE.

ALSO, PLEASE PREPARE YOUR QUESTIONS IN ADVANCE.  TELL FRIENDS AND BRING FRIENDS. IF YOU ARE A RESCUE GROUP, BRING ALL YOUR VOLUNTEERS. WE NEED TO SHOW THE CANDIDATES THAT WE ARE NOT A SMALL RAGGED TAGGED GROUP OF MALCONTENTS (QUOTING A FORMER COUNCILPERSON,AND PROBABLY ECHOS THE FEELINGS OF SOME EXISTING COUNCIL PEOPLE) BUT AN INTELLIGENT VIABLE COALITION OF TAXPAYERS THAT INTEND TO VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE THAT REPRESENTS OUR CONCERNS. THE CANDIDATES KNOW THAT THEIR CHANCES OF SUCCESS CAN BE MEASURED BY A FEW VOTES EITHER WAY.

NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF THIS CITY HAVE CANDIDATES FOR ANY CITY COUNCIL OR MAYOR RESPONDED WITH SUCH ALACRITY TO ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUES.  PLEASE DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO QUESTION THE CANDIDATES ON ISSUES REGARDING RESCUERS AND GUARDIANS,SHELTER ANIMALS, AND WILDLIFE. HOW YOU ARE PERCEIVED AND WHAT PART YOU WILL PLAY IN POLICIES THAT WILL AFFECT YOU AS A GUARDIAN AND RESCUER FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS,WILL BE DECIDED AT THE POLLS.

WE MUST PLAY A MAJOR PART IN THAT DECISION.  YOU HAVE HEARD THIS RHETORIC OVER AND OVER AGAIN..."ANIMALS DON'T VOTE BUT THEIR CHAMPIONS DO".  THE MESSAGE HAS FINALLY SUNK IN .....AND NOW IT'S TIME FOR ALL OF US TO BRING IT HOME.  I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ALL MY FRIENDS ON THE 9TH AND MANY OF YOU WHO I ONLY KNOW THROUGH COUNTLESS PHONE CALLS AND EMAILS.

MICHAEL BELL FOUNDER ..CITIZENS FOR A HUMANE LOS ANGELES  Friends of Animals:  As the date for our humane community convention draws near, there is a GOOD NEWS!  Citizens for a Humane Los Angeles (CHULA), the sponsor of the convention, has confirmed that candidates Bob Hertzberg, Richard Alarcon, Walter Moore and Antonio Villarigosa will attend. We are working hard to bring Bernard Parks and Mayor Hahn aboard as well, and believe that there are strong possibilities they will attend.  This is turning out to be a MAJOR event in the political season.

The Daily News has indicated it will cover the event. CHULA is also working on getting the TV news (which now seems likely given the response so far from the candidates).  NOW ALL WE NEED IS YOU!!

WHERE: The Beverly Garland Holiday Inn (4222 Vineland Ave. in North Hollywood)

WHEN: 10am-4pm Sunday, January 9th  CHULA would like to know approximately how many attendees to expect as there will be morning refreshments. Please pass this e-mail along to members of your groups and anyone you consider a member of the humane community or an animal lover. A STRONG TURNOUT will ensure the strength of our collective voices in this election.

LET'S SHOW OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT HOW STRONG THE ANIMAL COMMUNITY REALLY IS!  If you have an estimate of how many people from your groups (or friends that you know) are planning to attend, please let me know so I can pass the info along to CHULA. This is an exciting time for the humane community. We now have an LAAS Commission that is balanced in favor of the animals. We have a new General Manager who has pledged cooperation with the humane community and comprehensive reforms to the beleagured Department of Animal Services. Now what we need is a progressive, compassionate, effective Mayor who can lead Los Angeles into the 21st century of animal care and control. YOU CAN HELP MAKE THIS A REALITY BY SUPPORTING THE HUMANE COMMUNITY CONVENTION!

During work I came across some puppies which need a home. I am working
with the property owner to help out this situation. The puppies are in
Riverside County. I am not sure how many there are, I saw two. They are
adorable rottweiler/pit mixes. Both parent are friendly, however I am not
sure how mom will react when the puppies are taken. Do you come pick them
up? Do you have spay and neuter services? Thank you!

I heard on the news that several groups have come forward to take any of these adoptable dogs. Where are those people for the other shelter dogs, surely more than 30, that will die tomorrow at kcac?

Regardless, thanks Jody, keep us posted.

Hi guys- Just a quick update. I did an interview w/ch 29 news (KBAK) re: the Mohave dogs tonight, and our plans for them, etc. Hopefully they will run it at 11 along w/the original footage to keep people in mind of how horrific this situation was for these poor dogs. They wanted to know our plans for tomorrow, our hopes for the future of the dogs, etc. Let's hope tomorrow goes well.

Thanks for all of your support. I'll send a post tomorrow so you'll know how we fared at the shelter. :-)

Happy New Year!!

Thankfully, for the sake of my sanity <G>, a group of small dog rescuer's has come to my assistance and I delivered the last small dogs from Yvonne (Bakersfield homeless woman) this morning.  Two are remaining here with me as they actually are terrier-y guys and the sort of dog that I am able to place.  And this brings me to the main purpose of this missive.  There are a number of very nice dogs from Evonne that need responsible rescue placement.  They have lived for an indeterminate amount of time chained out, but they are remarkably social and friendly once they are off the chains.  I know, I now have six of them in my kennel and I am going back on Wednesday to pick up a couple more.  These dogs need to be spayed/neutered/vaccinated, the whole bit.

This is not something I can do without help.  People come to me for TERRIERS, not Shep mixes, not Rott mixes, not Aussie mixes or Border Collies.  The reason I took this on as a project is to help Evonne, who is now living in a van with no heat, no water, no power, and doing her best to keep these dogs safe.  She is in her mid to late 60's and her husband is in a nursing home and in and out of ICU.  Evonne needs to be able to take care of her husband and live like a human being, but she will not abandon the dogs. Kern County Animal Control will not take owner turn in's, even to euthanize.  And Evonne cannot afford to have a private vet euthanize them, which is preferable to leaving them to fend for themselves. Evonne is being a more responsible pet owner/care giver than most of the people we consider as potential adopters.

Please go to  http://dboneweb.com/dbgallery/albums.php and click on "Yvonne's Dogs" for pictures and comments on some of the dogs. Huey, Miss Priss and Turley are already safe with responsible rescuers.  The bigger dogs need to have the same chance.    I will help with transport and am vaccinating the dogs as I get them.  I need responsible rescuers to take on the dogs for spay/neuter and placement in foster and permanent homes. If I cannot get some help with placing these dogs then I will have to honor the second part of my promise to Evonne.  I will be there with them as they cross the bridge, so that they will know that they were loved and cared for.

REALLY Sweet Yellow Lab/AM-Staff mix- "Rolle", M. 4 yrs. and 7 mos. old. This wonderful dog was adopted from this shelter and horribly turned in to the shelter when his family moved away and didn't take him. He is a really great pet, who's already got rudimentary training. He yearns to have an owner, someone he can shower all his love on; it's clearly evident in the way he looks at people who just walk by. He needs a home where he will be taken care of and will be loved. He's already neutered, so you can take him home ASAP.  He has been at the shelter since Nov. 29th and time is running out. Please save him!

Notes from Samantha:

I took Rollie out of the kennel in to the play area on 12/9. Rollie is very sweet. He was not at all hyper even after being in the shelter for such a long time. He just sniffed around and greeted everyone looking for a little affection.

Rescued Pup in Danger:

My sister found a dog a couple of weeks ago in Hawthorne she lives by the freeway (405 & 105 fwys) apparently someone dumped this poor dog.  He is a shep x  goldish tan med size , short hair , long nose , floppy ears, seems to be about a  year old.  He is not neutered.  (total lovebug)

My sister has taken in many animals in the past 20 years living in this area.  She would keep this guy but the problem is her pitbull is not going for this new guy being around the house.  She has muzzled the pit during the rainy nights so he could sleep inside.  She is willing to drive him to a loving family or to a rescue/foster home and will donate a hundred dollars or more if someone is able to help him,  she does not want him to go to the pound , but as she put it she is living in hell right now with the two of them there.  It is only a matter of time until Biff gets a hold of this dog.   Please crosspost this far and wide.  My sister has ran ad's in every local paper for a found dog for over a week not one phone call.  If someone is able to help this dog and my sister please call 310-643-8230 and ask for Carla  Thanks Andi

Remember Jake Zack? The dog that was drug on the side of the truck on his trip to the animal shelter...  Well his wounds are healed now (just leaving scars... and his pads on his feet are "growing back"). Now he is DESPERATE for a foster home or permanent home.

I have photos of him when he first got his bandages on and, will have some new ones posted ASAP.  Zack is a great dog. He likes to sit next to you on the couch and be buddy buddy. He's a little shy at first, but warms up and is very sweet and loving. He's lived his life on a chain, but seems to be very well adjusted to the house life.. Housebroken so far... Well he asks to be let out... If you don't let him out he'll go. He's great with other dogs. He's 41 pounds, and 2 years old. This guy is going to need someone who will truly give him the love he deserves...

A little more information on the woman that did this and the whole situation if you're not familiar with it... Early July SOAR was called by the General Dog and Cat Vet Clinic who had received a dog in from the animal shelter. The was being brought in by a woman that had found him, and on the way there the dog had fallen out of the back of her pick up truck with the rope around his neck... being drug into the shelter. The woman said he had just fallen out when she got into the parking lot, so she decided to just go around to the back. The woman stopped the truck and one of the shelter staff spotted the situation, the woman was still in her truck, gabbing on her phone, and he hit her window and threw the dog back into the truck (as he was strangling). There was blood everywhere, the officer stated... one of the other officers grabbed the dog, but him into an animal control truck and rushed him to the vet.... where we were called and took the dog on. Well after SOAR took him on, the shelter took this on as a cruelty case and pursued it. The woman originally stated this was a stray dog that had been in front of her house. They went to the woman's home. Talked to her neighbors, who said that she's had the dog since he was a puppy, and even gave the name of the dog (which we don't know, but think a new name for a new start in life). They said the dog as always been on a chain... The looked into her yard and saw 5 chains. Four with dogs on them and one was empty... They then spoke to the woman's son, who told them everything... Then the talked to the woman herself... Who told them EVERYTHING after she was found out. She then stated that the poor dog actually fell out of the truck while she was ON THE FREEWAY. BUT SHE KEPT GOING TO THE SHELTER as she thought it would be easier than stopping on the freeway... That means he was dragging for at least 10 miles... WE don't know how he's still alive. They're now working on a court case against her....

NOW ZACK IS SAFE AND SOUND.. HE DESPERATELY NEEDS SOMEWHERE TO STAY. HE'S CURRENTLY BOARDING AND HE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!

PLEASE HELP ZACK!! THANK YOU....

I just got a call from a lady named Julie.  There are three adult dogs and two puppies running loose somewhere in Delray Beach.  She was on her way to work or somewhere and saw the dogs.  Her and her Mom have been going out there and feeding them every day but can't catch them.  She said they seem very friendly but she's afraid to just try to grab them herself.  The pups are supposedly young.  Old enough to get around on their own, but not older pups.  She said she's tried calling humane societies, SPCA and other rescues and nobody can help.  She called animal control and they said they'd be euthanized in three days so she is using that as a last resort.  She said they are willing to help with some costs and may even be able to foster the pups.  She said it's a less then desireable neighborhood that these dogs are in and she really just wants to try to help these dogs.  She said what she thinks is the mother dog is black and may be like a Lab mix.  Big surprise there, right?  One may be a Greyhound and the other two are medium to large dogs as well.  She said two aren't even eating.  She understand that they may be so sick that they end up euthanized, but she says the pups are adorable and she doesn't want to see any of them killed if possible.  Of course we all know that we can't save them all, but I wanted to pass on the info incase anyone is down in that area and may be able to help.  She said two of them won't even eat the food she puts out.  I'm sure these dogs are loaded with worms and God knows what else.

If anyone can help at all you can contact her at 561-852-0278.  Her name is Julie.

Thanks!

How do you build a No Kill community? How do you get animal control, the
health department and other government agencies to embrace it? How do you
include feral cats in your community's lifesaving protection? How do you
pay for it all? And what about those big black dogs, shy cats and other
"compromised" animals with impediments to adoption - can good homes be
found for them too?

You'll learn about no kill programs and services that have had results in
both urban and rural communities and hear effective strategies on how to
prevent surrenders, increase adoptions, improve
public relations, work with local government and private groups such as
veterinarians, implement cost-effective behavior and medical
rehabilitation programs, save feral cats, raise the money to pay for it
all, and more. The conference includes presentations, seminars,
workshops, and even one-on-one private counseling and support that will
assess your circumstances and provide how-to information specifically
geared to your community.

I saw this dog at South LA shelter yesterday and melted.  She is very mellow, very sweet and very very sad.  If anyone can take her, I will pay her bail.

Correspondents and Liaisons Needed!

There are a myriad of positions available for many different agencies throughout the U.S. There is a great need for shelter workers and volunteers, liaisons, political activists, campaigners, publicists and press people, photographers, correspondents and, yes, transporters!

Most of these positions are not, in and of themselves, demanding. Of course, if you care about animals they can become very time consuming efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and varied talents of those who are doing this work -- many out of the kindness of their hearts.

If you are interested in volunteering for this effort or others, we invite you to write us and let us know what you'd like to do, how often and how you like to work. We're sure to be able to find a match for you!

We thank God for each and every one of you who care enough to confront almost insurmountable odds to do everything you can to change this travesty in our world, often facing your own  humanity to do so, and putting your own emotions on the line to care for the voiceless among us: GODSPEED to each and every one...
