COLUMBIANA OHIO POUND

I'm sure most of you have seen posts about the Columbiana, Ohio county dog pound. It seems like every week we get messages saying that Columbiana is overcrowded and they are going to begin gassing dogs to make space.

Liz Jones of Peaceable Kingdom rescue in Allentown, PA is having a very hard time finding volunteers in the area to pull dogs for her while she arranges transport to PA. Right now Liz has 5 dogs sitting in the Columbiana pound, already altered and waiting for her to pull, but the person who usually helps her with this seems to have disappeared. Liz will pay the adoption fees, but once she has paid, the dogs have to be pulled within 48 hours or she loses both the money and the dogs!

Columbiana County is in eastern Ohio, south of Youngstown  and east of Canton. There really aren't any large towns in Columbiana, which seems to make it harder to find volunteers.  If you know ANYONE in eastern Ohio or western PA who might be able to help, will you please forward this message to them?  I am in Ohio, but about 2-1/2 hours away from Columbiana Co.  Volunteers can contact Liz at
ljones@ot.com.

Thanks so much!

Update-Monday Adoptions at the Columbiana County Dog Pound

This has been an unusually slow day for adoptions at the pound!  As you all know, the dogs that are listed on our site must be placed today and this evening.  There are still thirteen dogs available and listed as URGENT.

http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/OH417.html

If you know of anyone that might be looking, please direct them to our site -OH417 at Petfinder.com.  I am not sure how to send you a link!  All of the dogs that are available are friendly, younger dogs.  The only dog that concerns me in the least is a male lab mix #404.  We have seen no aggression, but he is completely silent and still.  I have spent some time patting him, but he will hardly even look up at me.  He does go outside for breaks like every other dog, but he is so unusual.  I think that he has not been touched before by people.  I would recommend that if possible a rescue adopt this dog for some rehab before being placed in a home situation.

I will be happy to return email after we close this evening to answer any questions that I can or to assist in any adoptions.

Please tell people that you know that when they've lost a dog to check our site! Pictures are posted as soon as possible under the "Click here to see dogs picked up/brought in in the last 72 hours". According to Ohio Revised Code, the dog pound must observe this stray hold in order to give the owner a chance to locate their dog. We ARE NOT able to adopt any dog early! After this hold period, the dogs may be adopted to new homes. PS-an ad in the newspaper may also help. Some people are reluctant to surrender a stray that they find to the dog pound. If they see an ad or a flyer, they are able to contact you.

Who We Are

We are an animal control facility. We are the only shelter for dogs in Columbiana County. We are a rural county with a very common overpopulation problem. This January our commissioners and Angels for Animals entered into a contract that makes spay/neutering dogs from the pound manditory in an attempt to educate and provide pets at a reasonable cost. This program and some very hard work by Safe Haven Rescue have resulted in a successful adoption program. We still average more dogs than pens each week, but we are finding some terrific homes and meeting some incredible people!

Donate a Bed We use Patented Kuranda Dog Beds because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean. If you would like to donate a bed to us, click here.

Adopting a Dog

If you find a dog that you are interested in adopting, please call the dog pound at 330-424-6663. We will be happy to explain our simple adoption procedure and tell you what we can about the dogs. All dogs are spayed/neutered and given a rabies vaccination before leaving. Trips for vet work are scheduled each Monday and Thursday morning and you can pick up your new pet between 2 and 4:00 pm the same day. All dogs are $50.00. This includes an Ohio dog license. An additional package is available at the time of s/n for $40.00. It includes a heartworm check, worming, flea control, and booster vaccination. This is optional. Payment must be received before the dog can be scheduled for vet work. Often this means Western Union or overnight a Money Order or Cashier's check if you are not close enough to the pound to stop in.

Come Visit Us!

We are located approximately three miles West of Lisbon off SR 30. You may view dogs anytime during working hours.
