Teenagers charged with setting dog on fire
BENTON, La. Three teenage girls face charges of animal cruelty after
allegedly pouring lighter fluid on a dachshund and setting the dog on
fire twice.
Bossier Parish sheriff's spokesman Ed Baswell says the girls allegedly
took the four-year-old dog named Coco to a known dumping ground for
animal carcasses left by hunters northeast of Benton.
There, he says, they poured lighter fluid on the dog and used a
cigarette lighter to ignite the animal. The dog ran away in flames,
which quickly went out.
Baswell says the teenagers caught the dog and set it on fire again. The
dog ran a bit further that time, engulfed in flames. He says the fire
went out, and the dog was still alive but fled into the woods where they
left it early Saturday.
Baswell says deputies were called by the parent of a youth who had
heard the teenagers discussing the incident and when deputies confronted
the girls they confessed.
Meanwhile, Coco's owner, Dan Wolff, is still searching for his dog. He
says he's still trying to figure out why the girls did what they did.
Eighteen-year-old Ashley Cochran was booked with cruelty to an animal
and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Bond was
set at eight-thousand dollars. Two other girls, a 13- and 14-year-old,
have been charged with cruelty to an animal. Their names have not been
released because they're juveniles.

Animal Cruelty Case in Bossier Parish
I'm sure you all have heard about the awful incident of cruelty to the
little Dotson in Bossier Parish, where the little dog was set afire
twice.
It is in today's paper. I have already spoken with the DA in Benton's
office
[the parish seat is in the town of Benton]and was told the best way to
voice outrage is to write a letter to:
Mr. Schuyler Marvin
P.O. Box 69
Benton, LA 71006
A phone call would also help, I believe.
The phone # is 318-965-2332. Ask for the DA's extension.
Please feel free to forward this letter to anyone.
The DA is trying to decide which of the two charges to make. Of course,
the greater charge is in order. It is important that precedence be set
in this matter. I hope when the defendants are sentenced that they will
be given a long time in jail to think about all of this.
I think public service to animals in some way would also be in order
in addition to the jail time, fines, etc.
Please help get the word out anyway you can!!
