EXACTLY WHAT DISEASES ARE RAVAGING FLORIDA'S SHELTER DOGS??

RESCUE NOTES: [keep reading after you read this post - there are more.]

One of the  foremost Immunologists in the country , and THE one  who was involved in the  outbreak involving Greyhounds in Jacksonville , FL,  ( Not Hialeah ) Dr. Cynda Crawford,  just  left my house at  3:50 this afternoon..She drew blood for Blood serums, did nasal and throat swabs for cultures..   ALL of these  samples are  being split 3 ways.. One to her lab , one to Cornell University in New York, and the last  going to the Center for Disease Control.. I beg you people.. Do NOT try to medicate your dogs yourself.. Dr Crawford said these dogs I have from MAC do NOT have distemper...She asked me to pass the word to be very careful  and only  use your Vets for dosing your dogs with any medications , as you can easily  kill your dogs with something such as the Newcastle's from a feed store with a wrong dosage  etc..The virus these dogs have is a type of Influenza, and I repeat .. she stated this is NOT DISTEMPER...and unless its a very bad case.. this will pass by itself with NO  medication within 3  weeks..and with  Doxycycline 10 mg  per pound twice a day  and injectible Ceftiofur given  Sub Cutaneously  in 2 weeks or less depending on severity.. Please be vigilant and watch your dogs.. but do not try to cure something that isn't there ...We will have the final results from Cornell, NY and Dr Crawford in 2 weeks or less and as soon as I have them I will forward to  anyone who wants them ..

(¸.·´There is an Indian legend which says when a human dies there is a bridge they must cross to enter into heaven. At the head of that bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based upon what they know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridge ... and which are turned away.

Am very glad to hear that there are other treatments available.  I am still curious whether Eric used it as a preventative or if they had been diagnosed.  With anything that needs to be treated symptomatically, sometimes catching it early and preventing the side affects such as dehydration, secondary infections etc. can cause a real turn around in symptoms.  Perhaps what Eric found had the right combination of fluids and 'whatever' to keep his pups from failing.  That truly is wonderful.

Subject: For Pets Who Need Rescue Fwd: Dutch Shepherd update

Kricket,

My understanding is that the vet used the New Castle vaccine that is a vial you can buy from the feed store to use for chickens.  The vet did not make up the kind that uses a donor.  (I can't imagine my vet wanting to do that either!)  ~Lia  --- In MiamiDadeRescueRailroad@yahoogroups.com, eandgstropicals@a... wrote: As you know the two dutch shepherds that I pulled last Wednesday from MAC were diagnosed with distemper on Monday.

They both received the NewCastle injection.  Of the two dogs one was much sicker than the other and she had stopped eating and drinking since Friday. She was kept on IV fluids for hydration. To my surprise this morning she began drinking on her own, and eating some as well.  Her activity level has increased as well.

She went from being very lethargic to somewhat active. She also started chewing on some marrow bones I let them have. I wasnt sure this pup was going to make it. I know its still very early but the improvement has been very dramatic in just 24 hours. She even went as far as tearing the IV out of her leg. I figure she doesnt need it anyway since she is drinking.  The other pup has improved with her kennel cough. She has gone from coughing regularly to now just coughing when excited.  I will keep you guys posted with pics to come.  Keep your fingers crossed that these little girls pull thru.
