There is a Florida Senate bill that proposes LOWERING the pharmacy
dispensing standards for animals: Senate Bill 2452. Basically, it
establishes lower standards for pharmacies dispensing to animals, namely:
1) Allow pharmacy technicians to initiate or receive requests for original
prescriptions for nonhuman use. (Currently only allowed for refills.)
2) Allow pharmacist supervision of five pharmacy technicians for nonhuman
use activities. (Currently 1:1, or 3:1 under certain Florida guidance.)
3) Authorize pharmacy to dispense a prescription for nonhuman use pursuant
to a facsimile prescription without receipt of the original prescription.
(Currently pharmacy must receive original prescription before delivering
drug.)
Jeb Bush has the power to veto this bill and many of the Vet Pharmacists
at
Vet Schools have sent an email/fax/letter urging him to veto the bill.
Florida Residents should also contact him urging him to veto the bill.
Animals deserve the same standard of care that humans do and we should not
be starting to set a precedent that lowers the standards.

URGENT: TEMPORARY CARE FOR DISPLACED FAMILY PET IN
HURRICANE ZONE
My name is Ashley
Sandrock and my family and I are residents of Charlotte county
Florida which, i'm sure most of you know, on Friday Aug. 13th
underwent the devastating hurricane named Charlie. We are not
currently able to live in our house because the majority of the
ceilings have fallen and our roof is severely damaged. We were,
however, very lucky and found a rental house in Charlotte County.
Which brings me to my dilemma. One member of our family is an 11 month
old male Brittany named Maverick. The house that we are staying in for
the time being will not allow us to keep him here. We are not looking
to give him up for adoption but just trying to find him a temporary
foster home while our house is being rebuilt.
Maverick is a very loving boy who is
nondestructive and housebroken. He is currently up to date on all of
his shots and is on heartworm preventative. He does not get along
very well with other dogs (males especially). He is very energetic
which if you're familiar with the breed you know is very normal. He is
guilty of an occasional counter surf but knows NO very well. He knows
basic commands like sit, down, and also gives hi fives!
Maverick is currently staying in a kennel but
because of financial needs our family cannot keep up with the costly
charges of normal boarding fees. We will however pay for food,
necessary vet trips, and any other cost that we would, under normal
circumstances, be paying anyway while he is in a foster home.
We love Maverick very much and hate to be
without him so we are looking for a good alternative for him. The
reconstruction could take up to 6 months and don't want nor can afford
to keep him in a kennel for that long. If you can help out our family
member we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for any help you can
give, Ashley, Ray, Zack, Alyssa, and Maverick Sandrock.
New Pit Bull Rescuer! Arrange a meeting and enlist her aid?
My name is Alta King and I live in Thonotosassa, Florida. I own three
pit bulls and I am fostering a fourth from Tennessee. I am here because I
believe in saving lives of all animals. I have a three year old
daughter and a fiance. I hope to one day, open my own rescue to pit
bulls mainly, but not excluding other animals. I work for
Universal Engineering, as a lab tech. I am responsible for soil
compaction in the lab and testing of Construction materials. Well,
that's me in a nutshell, how about you guys?

There are bus trips from Brooksville to show. Show runs from 7 a.m.
to 12 a.m. Groups will be televised each day at the time they are
shown - around 8 p.m. Entry cost is $18.00 for one day & $25.00 for
two days. Seniors & military $15.00 & $20.00.
Brittanys will show Saturday at 8 a.m. in ring 6.
"Meet The Breeds is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Please let me start by saying, if this is an
improper post for this site, I am sorry, I am just posting to every list
we belong to in hopes of finding some help. Over the past year our group
has hit some major problems. The volunteers have all fizzled out for
different personal reasons or they have moved, ect. This left two of us
trying to run it ourselves. I have a bad back, but care for most of the
animals anyway. The other has a young baby, so she can only care for 2 of
the dogs. We decided to close the rescue and put our efforts into helping
the other groups .At that time we did not accept any new animals, to put
full effort into placing the ones that are here.
We are located in N. Cent. Fl. and just had
hurricane Francis come through. I suffered roof damage to my home, my dog
pens flooded, and our area is still without power in many areas. This is
not unique, most of us rescues in Fl. are hurting now and need your help
and prayers. I live in a mobile home, which I knew was not safe to ride
out the storm. We went to an abandoned house 2 towns away that we know of
and stack kennel crates with 17 dogs, 11 cats and a ferret. As you know
this is also not a great choice, if the storm would have hit that house
hard with all these babies in crates what could I have done. We now have
Ivan heading our way, and I am scared of what to do. I am trying to find
out if any of the other rescues can take even one of these babies in. If
your group can take them and find a good forever home this would be great.
If you can help just get them out of harms way
this is also a big help. Although I am desperate I only want them to go
with legitimate groups, I do not want them to end up with a bad situation.
They are mostly mixed breeds, and as with people they all have their
little quirks, I do not want them demand unadoptable and put down for
these, after the storm send them back if this is the case. I am sorry for
the length of my post, I will give a a list of the animals I need help
with, and you can contact me for details of any you might be able to help
with at: flpetpals@yahoo.com If
you can help transport them out, please also let me know.

many had left their pets. I can't tell you how upset this made me to hear

I've lost all my foster homes. TriCounty is
closed!! She took alot of pekes!! New Begining in Orlando is full, Peggy
in Ft.Myers may get the new storm, and Jody in Ocala is down. If any
pekes come in, I may need to just board them if I can not find a
place for them. That is all out of pocket and I'm going broke fast.
I do get some help from pcf but may need to
start leaving the Pekes behind if some financial help isn't found
soon. Frankly I'm a little disappointed and stunned, I have not one time
not given to any group fundraising for pekes funds or refused to
help any Peke in need ever anywhere anytime!! . Now I need it in Fl.
and we are hurricane orphans!! If anyone sent a donation to Peggy with
Pekes and Pals or TriCounty Humane in Boca who has 30 Pekes right
now, please forgive me!!
I do appreciate all the posting support but
without a place in Florida to send them I'm up the creek without a
paddle so to speak!! Help is needed!!!! It's unrealistic to send
them out of state without a transport plan and folks to come get
them!! NW airlines was a hoax so please see if you can post this for
me!!!!!!!!!!! I want to thank everyone for helping me in the past.
I do Peke rescue for 6 states plus where ever I
can help and this month
is very overwhelming. I work extra hours at my job and usually can
handle it financially but this month has been a killer.
You guys have all helped before and it would be
great if you could again.

The four surviving puppies are being treated at the
Escambia County Animal Shelter.
PENSACOLA, Florida (AP) -- Nice shootin', Rex!
A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the
dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.
Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the
Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a
hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.
Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the
head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's
office.
On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies -- one in his arms and another
in his left hand -- when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on
the trigger of the .38 caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the
sheriff's report said.
Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's
home, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.
The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia
County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

Hello All;
Please forgive the bulk mailing. I am home but only briefly. Hurricane
Frances packed a major punch to us. On a personal note our driveway is
washed to the point we cannot easily/safely get to our house. We are
going home to feed our animals everyother day except for Miakoda who we
are boarding as of today so I know she's safe and well fed. I am
presently trying to get things arranged to have our road repaired but this
will take some time.
In addition, an animal shelter which I serve as a Board of Director
member, was majorly flooded. Noah and I along with some other rescue
people worked through the night Tuesday night until we were forced to
evacuate in waist high water at around 4 am. We were working to save over
500 dogs and cats in the shelter, All Creatures Great and Small. By the
grace of God, I think our death toll at this point is only 12 dogs and
maybe one or two cats. I am truly amazed we didn't lose more than this
number. I know have a better understanding for what they mean by "flash
flood". The property is surrounded by two creeks. Once those creeks
jumped their banks it was no time before our parking lot and then our
building was flooded. We literally swam dogs to higher ground as the
waters rose. The poor babies were so terrified when we left them on the
hill where it was safe they wanted to follow us back when we went back for
others. Noah rode out in a rescue squad boat and I walked out with two
swimming German Shepards in each hand.
Please keep us all in your thoughts and prayers. Our animals are in need
of supplies. Our staff is in need of supplies and we all could use some
good thoughts and prayers coming our way. If anyone knows of anyone who
would like to adopt or foster an animal, please send them by if they are
local. Sorry no one is available to transport out of town now. Its all
we can do to take care of the animals and clean up.
If anyone needs to reach Drew or I, first try our cellular phone
828-699-1967 or Drew
at work 828-693-8461. I am not home to trust a speedy response by email
or home phone. Tonight we are staying at the Days Inn in Hendersonville
and tomorrow will probably move to a friends house.
I just spoke to Diane Albers, President of Florida Association of
Kennel Clubs. She is spearheading the rescue efforts, along with AKC.
These are her comments:
"Florida is in deep trouble. If Ivan hits Florida, there will be no
Florida left. The cattle and horses are standing 6 inches deep in water.
There is no pasture, no food. The shelters are overrun with dogs that
didn't evacuate with their owners. She is getting hundreds of calls daily
from people forced to do owner turn ins as they themselves have no homes,
no food, no gas, no water, no way to care for their animals. "
Northwest Airlines are offering to fly dogs out of Florida at no cost
(donated by NWA...remember them the next time you fly). They will start
flying dogs to me within a couple of days. Foster homes are needed.
Florida needs our help. She is getting hundreds of pure breds turned in
every day along with mixes.
Are we as "show people" so narrow minded that we only care about our
breed? our friends? or do we have the capacity to love all dogs and are
we willing to help?

David Clark, an officer of Ragdoll Rescue USA, is
going from SE FL to
the disaster area tomorrow (Wednesday, 8/18), to help the disaster
relief for Hurricane Charley. We are sending cat food & litter to
help any cats in need. We don't view this as a breed specific rescue
but are wanting to help ALL of the animals we can there. We realize
that many shelters have received help but there are probably many
individuals needing help for their pets, especially the folks in the
mobile homes who have refused to leave their pets, as well as many
lost pets needing help. Hopefully, we can coordinate our efforts with
other groups. If you can help please contact David Clark charleyrescue@yahoo.com

PLEA FOR ASSISTANCE IN CHRISTMAS

injured
animals from squirrels to horses called Fallin Pines Critter Rescue. She
is in desperate need of volunteers to help with the trees that have
fallen on cages, repair cages, remove 9 fallen trees, repair roof damage
as well as clean up. She has had over 40 baby squirrels brought to her
since Saturday that she has to feed every 2 hours. I have called
everybody I can think of and nobody wants to help because it is for
animals not humans. I realize there a lot of people that need help but
if anyone can volunteer their time to help her and the animals, we
would greatly appreciate it. Her website is

We
have been contacted by WKMG in Orlando. They need to place 30 cats
and dogs from a rescue without electricity.
This is from the executive director of the Animal
Welfare League in
Charlotte County, Florida. Please crosspost!
Thank you for your willingness to help. You can't image the
devastation that has been done to our community. The staff and
myself have been at the shelter numerous hours trying to clean up to
re-open. Without power or water it is difficult to say when we will
be back in full operation. Our roof is also of major concern, the
areas exposed are of the front offices, puppy room and feed storage
areas. The main kennel and cats areas are still usable. All our
outside fenced in areas are totally destroyed except 3 small potable
dog pens. We sustained much loss of office equipment.
We were well prepared and had evacuated all the animals to different
sights on Thursday. All important paperwork and some equipment was
removed from the building.
We are the County Animal Shelter and hold the county
contact for all
stray animals, cats being our most serious problem.
Currently we need to replace our roof, but still will be able to
operate, repair all our fencing and clean-up of debris and trees.
Items in need;
Dry Dog Food,Dry Cat Food and Canned Cat Food
Blankets and Towels (we have no power to do laundry)
Funds (for what insurance will not cover)
2 computer systems,fax machine
local foster care
All communication systems (including cellular) are out, that's why
I'm contacting now from my home. You can reach me at my home e-mail, otterbound@comcast.net

to accept the strays until we are able to accept them. However,
anyone showing up at our doors refusing to go there, we will
accommodate the animal.
Thank you for your concern, it is greatly appreciated and needed.

As part of American Humane's mission to protect animals, our work
literally involves protecting animals in the event of disasters --
both manmade and natural. More so than people, animals are often left
vulnerable, lost, and alone when fire strikes, hurricanes approach,
or flooding waters invade a community. Whereas people can seek safety
on their own, animals must rely on those people to look out for their
best interests. Often, those interests are overlooked due to time,
logistics, and availability of resources. American Humane comes to
the rescue with disaster preparedness training, veterinary care, and
our network of trained National Responders who can rescue animals
from all types of dangerous situations.
The Red Cross does not recognize pet hurricane shelters so states do
not feel obligated to provide them, and states also do not allow pets
in human shelters. Every year many people when evacuated won't leave
their homes because they don't want to leave their pets behind. They
put their lives at risk because they have nowhere to take them.
Shelters for pets usually are filled on a first-come/serve basis.
As far as I am aware, people who take their pets to shelters need
proof of vaccinations, Dogs: Rabies vaccine, Distemper/Parvo,
Bordetella, Coronavirus. Cats: Rabies vaccine, FeLeuk, Rhino/Calici
Virus, Panleukopenia.
This is another reason to ALWAYS have ALL animals, rescues or pets,
wearing name/ID tags and/or licenses on their collars. Even and
always during transport as well. If they become separated from you in
an emergency, these tags will help rescuers return the pet. Better
yet, microchips which enable the appropriate authorities to return
lost pets even if they lose their collars and identification.
--- End forwarded message ---
I read that post also and am from the same county. That rumor was
widely circulating around this county and one of the people in my rescue
group was called to come save as many animals as possible before they
were killed. She decided that before she got frantic she would call the
director of animal control.
She talked to the director about the rumor and part of it was true, they
were euthanizing animals that were considered unadoptable
in order to make some room for animals from the public (and indeed some
people that evacuated brought their pets to animal control, I won't even
start on that topic) and those that were made homeless by the storm.
They were also setting up living quarters at the shelter so that all
personnel would live there during the storm so that they could care for
the animals, filling water barrels, bringing outside animals in, etc.
Luckily we were spared any impact of the storm. I pray for the
people and animals down south. It is human nature to repeat
things that we have heard and many, many local people reacted to that
rumor. I'm glad that someone took the time to call to verify the
story before passing it along because sometimes these rumors are hurtful
and dangerous. Those who have been on these lists for any length of
time can probably think of information that has been posted
withoutverification that has turned out to be inaccurate.
You know, the really sad thing is that at least 80% of the
animals that come in to my animal control end up dead in the front end
loader waiting to be dumped into a mass grave. And a good number of
the 20% that survive are lost pets that are claimed. So although it was
awful to think of all of them getting killed at once because of a storm,
thereality is that one-by-one and day-by-day, most of them will end up
dead anyway. So very tragic. Beth

Obviously, there is no attempt made to have a plan to save the
animals when a hurricane is coming.

O, God that is just horrendous. Is that why they did this do you
think? If you know of any animals in need from the hurricane my partner
and I are ready to take some in. Dawn
As you
probably know, the west coast of Florida is now being ravaged by Hurricane
Charley. This will mean thousands of dogs and dog owners will be
displaced. Pamela Gray of Redlands Rescue from south Florida is in the
process of coordinating relief efforts for Dobermans and their families.
While monetary donations received will be used to help Dobermans,
information and food will be made available to any dog in need.
Here is what is needed:
Volunteers to check hotels throughout the State of Florida to find out if
they will accept a dog/Doberman and if they have room; also location and
rates. Volunteers would need to email sheilla@doberman911.org with their
information so that a database can be compiled to find lodging for
displaced dogs and their owners. You may wish to "check in" and see if
the city or cities that you are planning to research have been covered by
someone else in order to avoid duplicate efforts and cover the broadest
area in the least amount of time.
Volunteers are needed to check with kennels and boarding facilities
throughout the state of Florida for vacancies. Also find out if they are
willing do donate space to hurricane victims, and if not, what their rates
are. Again, the location and contact information for the kennels along
with other pertinent info should be emailed to sheilla@doberman911.org to
be added to a central database to aid displaced dogs.
Temporary foster homes will be needed to house displaced dogs/Dobes until
they and their owners have somewhere to go. If you are willing to take in
a 4 legged storm victim, please email sheilla@doberman911.org and let me
know where you are located and many dogs/dobes you would be able to
accommodate on a temporary basis. I will also need to know if you wish to
foster a Dobe or other breed, or if it does not matter. Do you prefer a
male or female, and large, med., or small dog? It will also be helpful to
know how far you would be able to drive to pick up a dog in need.
Volunteers willing to try and arrange food donations and or set up a
transportation chain to get food, water, and other dog supplies into
Florida are also needed. If you can help in this respect, please email
dobelover@adelphia.net with what you are able to do, what donations you
are able to procure, or what area you might be free to help with in terms
of driving. (Drivers are also be needed to help get dogs into foster
homes as well as bringing in supplies.)
Finally, monetary donations are also needed. Special Needs Dobermans
http://doberman911.org will be acting to gather tax-deductible donations
to help with displaced Dobermans. A link will be added to the index page
of the website this evening (8/13/04) with a PayPal button for online
donations. Donations that are mailed should go to Special Needs
Dobermans, 144 Road 2776 Aztec, NM 87410. "Disaster Relief" should be
noted in the memo line.
If you think of other ways to help, please email Shelley Baker at
dobelover@adelphia.net or Pamela Gray at redlandrescue@aol.com .
Shelley and I will be keeping records updated and making sure that Pam
gets all of the info in an organized and timely manner.
On behalf of the Dobes and other dogs that will be helped, we thank you
for any gift of time or money that you can offer.

RESCUE IN MIAMI:
The man dressed
in green robes walks right past me with a momma cat. Her children left
in the cage behind looked bewildered. Where did he take momma? It took
him about 2 minutes and he was back again. And again. And again. There
was a somber look on his face. This is the death ward at Miami Animal
Control.
I walk in. Some
dogs raise their head to see me better, some are too deep in depression
to care. I rush to write id numbers, take pictures, jot down info, make
calls and yell over the loud cries which ones I will put on hold. He
continues taking more dogs. My hand starts shaking as I try to
write faster.
Suddenly, all
the commotion ceases. The barks become distant. A dog looks into my
eyes. My hand keeps writing but I cannot stop looking. We look at each
other so sadly and so lovingly. Like a mother holding her baby for the
last time. She is a large mixed breed. She senses death is near.
"None left to rescue, none left to buy, none left to suffer, none left to
die.
None to be beaten, none to be kicked... all must be loved and all
must be fixed"

There is a female rottie, around 2 I
think. Her name is "Baby".
Needs to be rescued from local shelter. She is heatworm +, but
shelter wil pay for that, and doesn't get along with other dogs..
She is very sweet. I spent some time with her at the shelter on
Friday. She has a great personality.. Needs a great loving home. She
is at the Humane Society in Palm City, Florida just 30 miles north
of West Palm Beach. Please if you know anyone pass it along. They do
adopt out of state, at least they use to. New management in the last
year.
I can get the number if need be. It is the Humane Society of the
Treasure Coast in Palm City, FLorida
Thank you, April

There are a myriad of positions available for many different agencies
throughout the U.S. There is a great need for shelter workers and
volunteers, liaisons, political activists, campaigners, publicists and
press people, photographers, correspondents and, yes, transporters!
Most of these positions are not, in and of themselves, demanding. Of
course, if you care about animals they can become very time consuming
efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and varied talents of those
who are doing this work -- many out of the kindness of their hearts.
If you are interested in volunteering for this effort or others, we invite
you to write us and let us know what you'd like to do, how often and how
you like to work. We're sure to be able to find a match for you!
We thank God for each and every one of you who care enough to confront
almost insurmountable odds to do everything you can to change this
travesty in our world, often facing your own humanity to do so, and
putting your own emotions on the line to care for the voiceless among us:
GODSPEED to each and every one..
