Puppy Mill Pups Need Rescue!
I know this is a long shot there was a huge puppy mill bust in
Ga. The dogs are in terrible shape. The Dobes have been taken
by rescues but no Rottie rescues are in the area. Can anyone
help these poor dogs.
If anyone knows anyone in the area that could help please
contact me and I will put you in contact with the folk that can
help. There was an extensive transport set up by the other
breed rescues so transport is possible. Some of the dogs have
already died including a Dobe that the others were trying to
eat. Really sad stuff. If you know anyone who can help the
Rotts please step up.
Thanks,

My vet treats the local police canines and one the officers has
asked her help in placing his retired partner. The dog at
present is apparently getting pretty depressed just
staying in the police kennel. The officer can't keep the
dog himself and would really like to find him a good
home.
The dog is 8 years old, an intact male with a little arthritis in
one elbow but otherwise in good shape. He's current in all
his shots. My vet says he seems to have a good
temperament, at least she has had no problems when
examining him. She last saw him in November.
This is in the Atlanta area. If anyone is interested or knows
anyone who is, they should contact me and I'll put them in
touch.
Thanks, Ben Moore

Following is a copy of a letter I just sent via e-mail to
Governor Perdue regarding the practice of quarantining or
euthanizing entire shelter populations which has been required
by the Department of Agriculture for the purpose of containing
Parvo under the misguided belief that the virus is airborne.
Anyone wishing to help me stop the needless killing of healthy
adult dogs in shelters across this state, is encouraged to write
as many letters to the Governor as necessary in order to put an
end to this ridiculous practice. Gwinnett has been shut down
again, and there is no telling how many animals will have to die
over this. If you do choose to join me in my fight, please
e-mail me and let me know off list at
littlegoomba@bellsouth.net
I will also be contacting the Humane Society of the United
States for help regarding this issue.
Thanks,
Erika Dillingham

Dear Governor Perdue,
I am writing to you as a concerned citizen of the state of
Georgia, to tell you about a severe injustice that I feel is
being dolled out on the animals and the animal control officers
of this state.
Dr. Black, the state veterinarian, has declared that Parvo virus
is an airborne illness. This declaration has lead to the
destruction of countless numbers of healthy, adult animals in
the care of animal control facilities all across the Atlanta
area and in other parts of the state.
The Department of Agriculture
continues in the practice of closing entire shelters over
isolated cases of this disease, and then requiring animal
control facilities to either quarantine entire shelter
populations for 14 days, or euthanize these animals. In the
case of Gwinnett County alone, the cost of quarantining 150
animals for 14 days with the average cost of boarding being 15
dollars per day, would cost the county $31,500.00 not including
the cost of vaccines which are always required by veterinarians
before animals enter for boarding.
This is not the practice that
is widely held in other states across this country. The fact
is, that Parvo is NOT an airborne illness. The two main modes
of transmission are fecal to oral, and by mothers to puppies in
utero. Dr. Black has declared that Parvo may be sprayed up into
an aerosol when a hose is used to clean cages of infected
animals.
Even if this were true, that
aerosol would not travel the entire length and depth of an
animal control facility. It is the widely held practice of
animal control facilities in other states, to remove animals
that are within a few cages of infected animals, and to either
euthanize, or quarantine those that are in close proximity to
the one that was sick. Requiring animal control facilities,
such as Gwinnett, and others whose capacity for holding is
somewhere around 150+ dogs, to quarantine their entire
population, or euthanize the entire population, is absurd and
frankly inhumane.
Not only would this cost an
inordinate amount of taxpayer dollars, but it is completely
unnecessary, and is honestly taking a toll on the morale of the
county employees who are forced to euthanize all of these
disease free, adult animals, who's chances of contracting the
disease are minimal.
Parvo is a disease primarily of young puppies and unvaccinated
young adult dogs. It lives in the environment for some
estimates, several years, and can be spread for example when
animals lick grass that has virus shed on it by another dog, or
on the shoes of people who walk through a contaminated area. It
is resistant to most cleaning agents, although bleach seems to
be effective in eradicating contaminated areas of the disease.
The mode of transmission is primarily fecal to oral, which means
if a dog walks through grass contaminated with the virus and
then licks his paws, he may contract the disease.
Please would you consider researching this issue, and putting an
end to this absurd practice of quarantining or euthanizing
entire shelter populations. This disease is a disease primarily
of warmer months, and though there ARE ways to contain the
spreading of it, ie., by practicing proper sanitation techniques
in shelters and other facilities that house dogs, it can NEVER
be expected that in an environment where there is a constant
influx of strays and unvaccinated owner-turn ins, that Parvo, on
some level won't be an almost constant presence at this time of
year.
The practice of euthanizing
or quarantining entire populations is nothing more than a power
play in my opinion, and it is honestly doing nothing to control
the spread of this disease. The only way to control the spread
of Parvo, is to educate people on the need for early
vaccinations and to promote healthier ways of living for animals
in general.
Please protect Georgia's county employees by sending a message
to Dr. Black, Mary Greene, and the department of Agriculture,
that what they are requiring of shelters and other agencies
under their jurisdiction, is misguided at best and that the
practice of quarantining or euthanizing animals only in close
proximity to those infected, is the widely accepted practice of
animal control facilities across the country.
Sincerely,
Erika Dillingham

Katie,
There is a rescue group
up here in Wisconsin who would like to pull a dog in a Georgia
shelter, but they don't have any Georgia contacts for short-term
fostering or to help with setting up a transport. They wondered if
I could suggest someone, but I don't have any Georgia contacts
either.
Here is the URL.
Do
you have any suggetions for them? Thanks--in advance--for your

Georgia Deaf Dogs Fun Day is scheduled for Sunday, August 22, 2004
from
noon to 4pm. It will be at Piedmont Park inside Downtown Atlanta.
I
would like to invite all deaf dog owners to come out with their
dogs to
share an afternoon of fun and socialiation with them and theirs.
The directions from I-75/I-85 to Piedmont Park is from I-75/I-85
to
10th St NE to to turn left on Monroe Dive then turn left on Park
Drive
NE.
Here is the weblink to the Dog Park in Piedmont Park at
http://www.piedmontpark.org/visit/park_map.html to see #12 Off
Leash
Dog Park. You can park on Park Drive if it is not full in parking
lot.
Last Sunday I went there to double check the dog park which I lost
and
I was glad to check the park out then next day, Monday I called
the dog
park to find out where is the dog park also received an email from
Martin.
Here is the directions to the dog park when you go on Park Ave
across
the bridge before you plan to park on right side, there is a dog
park
on right before you across the bridge. When you get out of parking
lot,
you need to go down the hill then go under the bridge on left,
there is
a dog park.
Also my adopted owner, Martin with Little Man/Balthasar lets us
know
that the dog park is off the paved walk way the runs around the
empty
grass area close to Park Tavern. Martin would park by Park Tavern
then go
into the park by crossing over the hill and down into the paved
walk
way. Then take a right go all the way dwon until you see the park.
The dog
park is completely fenced in and has a double gate for additional
doggie security.
It means that you have two places to park either at Park Ave
Parking
lot or Park Tavern Parking lot on Monroe Drive that you might not
missing
it on left side.
For all those who will be attending please bring the following, a
lunch
if you wish to have a picnic, blankets or chairs to sit on, water
for
your dogs, poop bags, though there is a fenced off leash area I do
ask
for you to have your dogs on leash outside the off leash park.
This is
a public huge park so it will be shared with other dogs. The park
has a
lake that you can walk around and enjoys to see the views of
Downtown
Atlanta!!
See you there around noon which I am on my way from Petsmart with
BBC
people from British Broadcasting Corporation in London who will
film me
and my deafies for the show calls SEE HEAR then they and I will
meet
you all there... BBC want to film your deaf dogs in the dog park.

PLEASE HELP THIS POOR PUP
From
JulieKWebb@yahoo.com
One of the most heartbreaking situations
in the world is that of a
purring beautiful cat/kitten; or an eager, attention starving
puppy/dog- suddenly torn from the only life it has ever known-
tossed into a strange and scary environment- (a high kill...-
possibly gassing...--animal shelter). These are phenomenal pets
that, many times would be spend the rest of their lives devoting
their unconditional love to the individual that simply took a moment
out of their day to stop and scratch them on the head!
Tragically, most of these furbabies will never even get this one
chance to share that amazing love bottled inside their little furry
(scared and confused) hearts.
It is for these precious, deserving ones that I have started my own
rescue called Kitty City Rescue.... (Which despite the name will do
our best to help any animal in need..) At this point, we are a
small group of fellow animal lovers that have joined forces to pull
and place as many animals as possible into a life they deserve in a
loving, forever home. The majority of the group is based in North
Ga- Atlanta, Athens, and the surrounding counties and we will begin
by concentrating on the high kill shelters close by (since we can
logically be most effective in these areas at this point). Of
course we still welcome members from all over!
This will be a resource for those that need help or want to help.
If you can foster, help with transport, volunteer, ...or even just
spread the word and take the time to care and be involved, we want
and need you on our board!!

MOTHER AND PUPS ABANDONED: MOTHER NEAR DEATH
----- Original Message -----

got this e-mail plea. The woman seems to really care but doesn't
have the money to care for these animals she 'rescued' temporarily. She
is in MONROE (walton county)
Please respond to HEATHER not ME. contact info at bottom of msg.
Thanks!
I sent out a few emails this
morning regarding a mommy dog and 9 pups that I found abandoned, and she
responded to me. She said maybe you would be able to help me since you
are closer to me than she is. I live in Monroe off of Hwy 78.
> I found these dogs chained to an old rusty truck at an abandoned
house up the road from me. There was no food and no water and mommy
looked
like she was close to dying. I took them home and put them all under
my porch and have been taking the best care of them that I could. I
can't do it much longer though. I am a single parent and just do not
have
the resources to take care of 10 extra animals, but I couldn't leave
them up there to die either. Julie thinks based on what I know that the
pups are about 4 weeks, so in a couple of weeks, I'm going to have 9
dogs wandering my yard and I know that's not safe for them.
> They all need some medical attention. I'm sure the pups have worms,
and most likely mommy does too. She is covered in ticks that I've got
to get off of her, and her teeth look terrible.

can take these guys and make sure they're ok, I would really appreciate
it.

Correspondents and Liaisons Needed!
There are a myriad of positions available
for many different agencies throughout the U.S. There is a great need for
shelter workers and volunteers, liaisons, political activists,
campaigners, publicists and press people, photographers, correspondents
and, yes, transporters!
Most of these positions are not, in and of
themselves, demanding. Of course, if you care about animals they can
become very time consuming efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and
varied talents of those who are doing this work -- many out of the
kindness of their hearts.
If you are interested in volunteering for
this effort or others, we invite you to write us and let us know what
you'd like to do, how often and how you like to work. We're sure to be
able to find a match for you!
We thank God for each and every one of you
who care enough to confront almost insurmountable odds to do everything
you can to change this travesty in our world, often facing your own
humanity to do so, and putting your own emotions on the line to care for
the voiceless among us: GODSPEED to each and every one...
