Greek officials
and government press
officers, including the press arm of
the 2004 Athens Olympic Organizing
Committee, are making a last ditch
effort to save face by denying
allegations of the maltreatment of
companion animals and thereby staunch
the flood of negative press regarding
the mass poisoning of abandoned dogs in
a country wide "cleanup" for the
upcoming Olympic Games.
Those of us who have
lived in Greece and travel there on a
regular basis bear witness to the
truth. As well, Greek animal advocates
who deal with the inhumanity towards
both companion and farmed animals on a
daily basis should be the gold standard
by which the international community
judges Greece; not by the Greek
government's desperate
attempts to conceal reality and the sad
truth of the Greek animals tortured
existence.
As the international
community lobbies for assurances that
the summer Olympics will be a safe and
successful pageant, this "house
cleaning" campaign will surely outrage
the millions of people around the world
who cherish their pets,
This is an emotional and
time sensitive story. Exposure by your
news organization will have an enormous
impact on your viewers and the Greek
government.
