SENIOR GSD IS IMMEDIATE NEED OF RESCUE:                  WONDERFUL ENDING!!

This message was passed on to me, Kim-  dogresqr@yahoo.com from Renee. She does not have email, but you can email me, otherwise please respond to the sender (Renee), if you think you can help. The best thing would be to call her directly as she lives next door to Jake. Her number is: (631) 924-9264.

Dear GSD Rescuer,

I was contacted yesterday about an URGENT situation on Long Island, NY. A 10-12 year old pure breed Shepherd who's been tied up all his life in a yard has virtually been abandoned and needs immediate rescue. This sweet neutered male named Jake belongs to a man who had many farm animals who died due to neglect. Jake lived among them, his only companionship, but now he is alone and tied up to a three-sided shed, his only source of shelter. He is provided with some water and food by a neighbor who does cat rescue. She also got permission from the man to take Jake to the vet and have his terribly flea-bitten ears treated along with treatment for a skin condition that has since cleared. If not for her, Jake would have died. Don't know how he survived the brutal winter having no where really to hide. The local SPCA would not give this their attention because technically, he has "shelter" and there is a food and water bowl outside. But Jake has graciously (and sadly) accepted his fate.

He  used to bark and bark, but now he's quiet. When Renee comes to pet him and give him love whenever she can, he melts into her arms and is desperate for attention. Jake has a gentle and friendly disposition. Renee said that at one time, Jake had children who came to pet him, but since the man's divorce, no one is around. She said that the man is ignorant and thinks that Jake has what he needs to survive. He throws food out there before he leaves for the weekend. Jake is good with other dogs, cats and farm animals. He loves people, despite the betrayals he has endured. While he has never been physically abused, he has never known what it's like to be loved. It has been a hard life.

The owner, who spends all his time away from the house (at work and on weekends with his girlfriend in NJ) said that Renee has his permission to "get rid of the dog". He will sign a surrender agreement. She contacted me for help to get him out of that situation ASAP. It is too hot for this old boy now, and she is praying that Jake will have somewhere to go where he will be given a decent life for however long he has left (hopefully many more years) and lots of love. There's a long past he needs to forget...

I am an independent mixed breed rescuer, and I pretty much just help out at a local shelter and do not know much about Shepherds except that they are loyal, soulful dogs. I'm crying as I write this, thinking of what this poor boy must have suffered all these years. I'm turning to you as you have dedicated your lives to this special breed, and I'm hoping you can take Jake. I will make a $100 contribution and will help with transport. I can also go to meet Jake and take a picture if you need me to. A worker at my local shelter who evaluates the shelter's dogs said she'd come with me to meet him on GSD rescue's behalf. Or, if you have any affiliates in the area who could help, please let me know. Thank you for anything you can do. God bless.

Gratefully, Kim

Elvira,

Thank YOU for saving him!!!  He was the one dog we were worried about on the transport and he was the only one that did not start any  trouble!  He was soooo wonderful!  And you should have seen him  pulling Deedee, his transporter, around on her butt in the grass.  I  wish I'd had a video camera.  Thank you again!  You were his only  hope.  I've already tremendously apologized to Shirley for not  getting back to her before Friday, but I want to apologize to you,  also, because you were so worried about him.  I really feel horrible  for making you worry.  We were all scrambling to get as many animals  into rescue as we could, and the e-mails were just overwhelming.  I  can't even describe it.  Nobody slept, and Missy didn't even have  time to eat for 2 days.  She risked her health for these animals, and  I hope everyone can be grateful for her instead of holding grudges.    Thanks again, Elvira, you are an angel (Shirley, too!)!!!  ...rach

LUCAS

We need liaisons, photographers  writers, correspondents!

Most of these positions are not, in and of themselves, demanding. Of course, if you care about animals they can become very time consuming efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and varied talents of those who are doing this work -- many out of the kindness of their hearts.

If you are interested in volunteering for this effort or others, we invite you to write us and let us know what you'd like to do, how often and how you like to work. We're sure to be able to find a match for you!

We thank God for each and every one of you who care enough to confront almost insurmountable odds to do everything you can to change this travesty in our world, often facing your own  humanity to do so, and putting your own emotions on the line to care for the voiceless among us: GODSPEED to each and every one...

JOURNEY

"Looking for a home"
by Arlene  Pace

Once I was a  lonely dog
Just looking for a home.
I had no place to go
No one to call my  own.

I wandered up and down the streets,
in rain in heat and  snow.
I ate what ever I could find,
I was always on the  go.

My skin would itch, my feet were sore,
My body ached with  pain.
And no one stopped to give a  pat
Or gently say my  name.

I never saw a loving  glance,
I was always on the  run.
For people thought that hurting  me
was really lots of  fun.

And then one day I heard a voice
So gentle, kind and  sweet,
And arms so soft reached down to  me
And took me off my  feet.

"No one again will hurt  you"
was whispered in my  ear.
"You'll have a home to call your  own
where you will know no  fear."

"You will be dry, you will be warm,
you'll have enough to eat
And rest assured that when you  sleep,
your dreams will all be  sweet."

I was afraid I must  admit,
I've lived so long in  fear.
I can't remember when I  let
A human come so  near.

And as she tended to my  wounds
And bathed and brushed my  fur
She told me 'bout the rescue  group
And what it meant to  her.

She said, "We are a  circle,
A line that never  ends.
And in the center there is  you
protected by new  friends."

"And all around you  are
the ones that check the  pounds,
And those that share their  home
after you've been  found."

"And all the other  folk
are searching near and  far.
To find the perfect home for  you,
where you can be a  star."

She said, "There is a  family,
that's waiting  patiently,
and pretty soon we'll find  them,
just you wait and  see."

"And then they'll join our  circle
they'll help to make it  grow,
so there'll be room for more like  you,
who have no place to  go."

I waited very  patiently,
The days they came and  went.
Today's the day I  thought,
my family will be  sent.

Then just when I began to  think
it wasn't meant to  be,
there were people standing  there
just gazing down at  me.

I knew them in a heart  beat,
I could tell they felt it  too.
They said, "We have been  waiting
for a special dog like  you."

Now every night I say a  prayer
to all the gods that  be.
"Thank you for the life I  live
and all you've given  me.

But most of all protect the  dogs
in the pound and on the  street.
And send a Rescue  Person
to lift them off their feet
