These five pups have to move out  to rescue soon if they are going to leave the shelter alive.

Tonya is an adorable border collie/beagle mix, with a border collie's black and whitearkingsn a beagle sized body, and a beagle face.  All five pups  are extremely sweet, but very scared.  It's obvious they've had little or no  contact with humans in their very short  lives.  When a hand reaches out to pet them, they back off, but there's no trace of aggression.  They just don't know  what's going on.  Very sad, that they've livedt he first three months of their

Just looked at the group of dogs brought in...  dalmation beagle mixes and parents.  What an adorable bunch of dogs.  Sure hoping some rescue takes them All in. Wish I could but I'm way over my limit. Hoping I read they were saved.  Sue looks adorable and so scared.  What is the matter with the person that was moving and turned them all in. Makes me so angry.

Subject: More Urgent Animals in Point Pleasant, WV

More bad news for Mason County West Virginia - in addition to the 25 dogs surrendered by a single family, and the other puppies dumped off today, someone just brought in two more pups. And there's a four month old red and white husky mix that was hit by a car. His tail is wagging, he's eating and drinking, but he can't walk. There's a cat with a litter of kittens, and a two year old white cat. And the list isn't done yet. The shelter needs HELP!

There's a 3 year old dalmatian mix who is mother to two separate litters of dalmatian/beagle mix pups, and she's possibly pregnant again.  A purebred male beagle, the dad to all those pups.  And of course - all those pups, two years old and six months old.  None of these will be listed on Petfinder today because the shelter's camera is broken, and there's so much intake paperwork to complete.  But the shelter is now over their limit and they are looking at imminent gassing if these animals - especially those who have been there more than a week - do not move out right now.

Furry Friends Network of Pennsylvania has set up a fund to help out the Mason animals.  Anyone wishing to donate toward the cost of medical care or rescue expenses can do so through their website at

The Mason County Animal Shelter's petfinder website has finally been updated.  There are currently 25 animals in danger of being gassed, including 6 of the cutest PB Rottweiler puppies.  Please if anyone can take or pull any of these animals, I will help coordinate the transports for them.

Subject: Re: MASON, CO.,WV---Judy Oliver Quits after meeting with County Commissioners---URGENT SITUATION for DOGS!!!!

It's not that the shelter won't be "allowed" to work with the rescues, it's the people left working there that REFUSE to work with the rescues.  That's why we need to fight to get Judy back in there.  She knows how badly they need her, but the Commission has to agree to make certain changes before she'll return.  Rescues can pull whoever they want as long as they provide transport, unless we can get enough donations each time to rent vans and pay for gas.  But the people left to run that shelter aren't going to check them out, they'll just let them go to whoever asks first.  AND somebody at the shelter (not going to name names) told someone that Mitch, the Mastiff mix that's dog aggressive, gets along great with everyone!  He does not get along with males AT ALL.  Judy is their only hope, so let's try to get these changes made.  They need someone to train for euthanasia by injection, they need more than 1 volunteer, and they need more fundraising ideas.  And PLEASE remember to be NICE when addressing the commission (don't call anyone an "ignorant hillbilly").  Thank you all for your help!

This problem in WV has been ongoing.  I have been pushing for people from the various shelters to attend the No More Homeless Pets Conference sponsored by Best Friends, but I haven't gotten anyone to go.  They MUST hit the problem at the front end instead of bandaging at the tail end.  They MUST go to this conference and start heading it off at the pass.  The way it's working now, it's like standing in a river and trying to rescue a dog here and there from hundreds that are drowning instead of climbing up on the bridge and stopping the guy who is throwing them all in the river in the first place.  PLEASE, everyone, get the WV people to the October conference.  Go to the No More Homeless Pets Conference section at http://www.bestfriends.org/.  It's the only way.
Lori

Two days ago,  the director of the Mason County Animal Shelter in Point Pleasant, WV was called to a meeting with county officials.  They informed her that her budget was cut 50%, and she was to go back to the shelter, kill all but 10 cats and 24 dogs.  They called the dog warden, who was out on duty, and told him to get back to the shelter to help her.  Mrs. Oliver, the director, refused to comply with their outrageous order, and she quit. The county did grant a temporary stay of execution.  The shelter has 14 days, beginning as of 8/3, to get as many dogs and cats out as possible.  Those remaining at the end of that period will be gassed.

Many rescues are helping the dogs, though there are still many who need rescue.  In dire straits though are the unfortunate cats.  Only one or two are spoken for by rescue.  The rest of the cats on the list below will die in the gas chamber unless they are saved.  If anyone can help, please do! A generous donor has sponsored the majority of the cats at the shelter. Their vet care will be paid for, so if any rescue can help, PLEASE! We're begging for their lives. Don't let this generosity be in vain.

Please take a look at the Petfinder site at
http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/WV39.html. Only the cats with names under their names have been spoken for by rescues.

There are many, many beauties there. Some of them are:

Beth - a pretty adult female domestic short hair

Demi - an extremely beautiful black female domestic long hair, already wormed, spayed, combo tested and no upper respiratory infections
Fluffy - a sad girl, a lovely black and white domestic long-hair. The owner who loved her is extremely ill, and poor Fuffly was turned in to the shelter. She's only two years old. Please don't let her life end here! - fully vetted and combo tested negative URGENT!

Terri - young female DSH, gray, very pretty
Tom - a fourteen week old male domestic short hair, a little shy, but friendly.  Adorable little gray cat.
Tony - a young male tabby, fully vetted and combo tested negative
Wanda - an adorable little buff colored domestic long hair kitten.
Will - a handsome young Burmese mix, fully vetted, combo tested, managed to escape the upper respiratory infections that swept through the cat population at Mason, but unfortunately, he is infested with lice. Will is being treated for the lice, but the problem isn't totally cleared up yet.  He's well on the way to becoming lice-free though and we think he'll be ready to move on soon. Will is a sweet boy who really needs that second chance.
Zandy - a black and white Domestic Medium Hair sweetheart. She's only a year old, and very pretty. - fully vetted and combo tested negative

Of course, what I've listed is only a fraction of the animals available at the shelter. There are many, many, MANY more! And lots that haven't been listed yet. Anyone who might be interested in rescuing any of these pets, please check out the Petfinder page
http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/WV39.html The situation really is critical. Their spay/neuter fees are covered by sponsorships. All they need now is a place to go.

A fourteen year old purebred dalmatian was recently surrendered to the Mason County Animal Shelter in Point Pleasant, WV by an owner who was moving and obviously didn't care enough to take this long time family member along to their new home.  That sort of mindset baffles me.  Now this sweet dog is in a high kill shelter where he is in imminent danger of being gassed merely because of his age.  His in good health and very sweet, and totally confused as to why he's there.  There is no picture yet, but we hope to have one later this week.

The shelter is packed way beyond capacity, and animals are being gassed weekly.  It's a horrible way to die, especially for an animal who has given nothing but loyalty and love all his life and was treated shabbily in return.
