'SAVE OUR STRAYS' CLOSING SHELTER
"Missouri: The Puppy Pipeline
Listen to this series by Megan Lynch
Missouri's dog breeding industry is massive. An estimated third of the puppies sold in the United States come from the state. Deplorable conditions in sectors of the industry have led some to call it the "Puppy Mill Capitol of the Nation". A 2001 state audit revealed lax oversight and conflicts of interest within the agency charged with overseeing Missouri's massive dog breeding industry. Through discussions with investigators, state officials, veterinarians, activists, rescue groups, dog breeders and dog brokers, KMOX News set out to answer the question of whether that audit made any difference for thousands of suffering animals."

Part One examines why dog breeding is such a controversial issue.

Part Two looks at the issue of breeders who are skirting the law.

Part Three delves into the battle for legal reform.

Part Four is a tour inside the nation's largest dog broker.

Part Five offers some guidelines for buying a puppy without supporting lax breeders.

Listen to two web exclusives on the history and laws of the Missouri Puppy Pipeline!

I have been told that every time I send out an email it is labeled urgent.
Sorry, about this.

In 1996 when Stephanie and me started SOS, we thought things would be different. We thought people had a heart and compassion and would come forward to help with the animal problem in our area.  I told Stephanie at the time it didn't matter what othe people did, it was what we did. At the time, I did not know that my daughter would get sick
and die. That was a thought that never ever came to me. So, we continue to help the animals, get them adopted and never was there enough money, but
we made do. Mainly because we took our savings.

Then our daughter died and we had to sel our property.  At the time of her death we had around 200 animals waiting for adoption.

When she died, still no one came forward in our area to help. This should have told me something.

Anyway, I did not want these animals to be put down and I thought that I could carrry on. I was wrong. When Steph died, part of me died too. The only reason I kept going on was becase of the animals and my determination to get them all a home.

In June of this year I send out an email for help. The property that we were renting was sold and we had no place to go with the animals. I could give them all to the state, but I knew that they would be put down.

At this time several people and groups came forward, and thank you is not enough.

Some of the foster homes that the remainding dogs have been in, have brought them back to us. We now have 38 dogs here and this can not be.

The van that we have, has over 300,000 miles on it and the mechanic that worked on it two weeks ago has harmed our transmission and it is now out. The mechanic will not own up to his mistake and now we have no van, no money.

My mother was critical two weeks ago, and she died on November 19th. I did not have a vehicle or money to go to her funeral. Now my family will not speak to me and I will be shut out of the will from my mother.

Why is all of this happening and why am I bothering all of you about this? I guess for me to be an example.

If we do not rent a van to move these dogs to Chicago and to St. Louis by next Monday I will have to call my state inspector and give him these dogs. And, I will be finished.

I do not have a credit card to hold a van. Leslie at the shelter has given money to keep the old van going, but now she is tapped out. She will have to put down dogs and cats this week. One of the dogs is pregnant.

Everyone may want me to go away. Believe me, I wish i could too.

God places in everyone's lives trials and situations. They are
for us to grow.

Please do not critize me. I know my mistakes. I see them
everyday. I do not need to be reminded.

Any suggestions of how we can get a van to continue would be
greatly appreciated. If no response, I will know what I have to do.

Connie

A shelter in Missouri is being forced to close its doors on Wednesday, August 31.  All dogs not placed by that time will be euthanized.  As of early today (Saturday), the shelter has been able to place all but 18 dogs but are running out of time.  Check out www.petfinder.org/shelters/MO86.html and see some of the dogs remaining earlier in the week.  Look at those faces, can we let them die?

Staff and volunteers at Save-A-Pet (Grayslake, IL) can't let this happen.  Our shelter is currently at capacity so we must find temporary foster homes for these dogs until we can find them their forever home or have space to take them into the shelter.  It might only be a few days - a few days for you and a lifetime for the dog.  Or maybe you can foster a current Save-A-Pet dog and free up a kennel for one of these deparate dogs.

Action of humans have put these dogs in shelters, we as humans must save them.  If you are able to help, please contact Jenn Fluharty, Foster Care Coordinator at Save-A-Pet IMMEDIATELY.  Any dogs we are able to find a foster home for by Tuesday will be brought to Save-A-Pet on Wednesday and we ask that you pick up your special foster dog on Wednesday after their arrival.  All dogs have been spayed or neutered and are current on their shots.

Please get the word out to everyone you know over the next couple of days.  Send the message to all your e-mail contacts, call all your dog-lover friends.  Time is of the essence - act NOW!

Call NOW - Jenn Fluharty, 847-740-7788, extension 116.  Leave Jenn a detailed voice mail message including your name and number.

Thank you for Saving A Life.

I am forwarding this from another list and Joanne is not on any of them..... Joanne (IL eskie rescue chapter) got a frantic call from a woman by the name of Nicole who, with another woman named Diane, rescue puppy mill dogs.  They have just been notified of a huge puppy mill near Springfield, Missouri that will be sending a slew of their dogs to auction, or shooting them. These women are contacting rescue groups for all the breeds and have most covered except for the 9 American Eskimos. They know nothing about their condition, description or personality. If anyone can help, has any ideas, or wants more information, please contact Nicole at 480-650-1107 or e-mail her (in the Cc of this e-mail) at nicartistry@hotmail.com

If anyone can help or has a suggestion for her, I know
she would love to hear from you - ASAP.  Thank you!

Jamie

A local small-town pound took in a stray dog, black,
medium-sized, looks exactly like a black ACD. VERY pregnant.
She was not claimed, and was taken to the vet (who is my vet) to
be euthanized. They called me. She had 7 pups: 5 males, 2
females. 1 Chocolate, 6 black. Some are solid black, some
black and tan, a few with white splashes on their chests. They
will be 10 weeks old on Saturday. They are all sp/neutered, will
have their 2nd set of vaccinations on Friday (when their sp/neuter
stitches come out) and have been wormed twice with Panacur
and once with Albon for coccidia. They are, of course, adorable.

I need to get them placed if anyone has room for them. Their vet
costs were very reasonable; if a rescue takes them, I would just
like to be reimbursed for the actual cost.

I don't know what the father was, of course, but mom only weighs
about 35 pounds. The largest pup weighs 9 pounds at present,
the smallest about 6 pounds.

If anyone has space for any of them, please let me know. I am
located in Birch Tree, MO (about 125 miles southeast of
Springfield.)

Small shy coonhound girl to be shot

I received a call this morning from a lady who told
me she knows someone who is going to shoot his small shy female coonhound  this weekend and  asked me to take her.  How can I refuse?  But I've  already got 19 dogs and  am worried about losing my home.  I don't have the  money to get her  spayed, shots, etc. and really don't have the means to care for another  dog.

Can someone please take her in and spare me  this added burden?

SW MO K9s has been scrambling like mad to save as many dogs as possible during the summer homeless explosion!  What is it that  makes people dump, abandon, or take their pets to kill shelters in  the summer?  It's not just puppies, it's dogs.  We know these dogs  have lived in a home and been loved pets at one time.  Many have  been well cared for and are wearing new collars, yet no one ever  comes to claim them.  Anyway, our pounds are nearly all full at the  same time, and when that happens, the dogs who have been waiting the  longest are taken to the full, and over-capacity Humane Society.  we  all know what happens next.

We are not ahead of the game, and are barely keeping up.  We have  four labs scheduled to go to Minn. on Monday, July 19, where the  rescue will pick them up.  All are altered and very nice dogs.  Can  you help get these guys to safety.  I don't want to think about what  we will be forced to do if we don't get them out of here.  Legs on  the transport can be changed, so please let me know if you can drive any part of it. Please contact me at
cfos@mchsi.com so that I will not miss a chance
for help on a digest.

We need liaisons, photographers  writers, correspondents!

Most of these positions are not, in and of themselves, demanding. Of course, if you care about animals they can become very time consuming efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and varied talents of those who are doing this work -- many out of the kindness of their hearts.

If you are interested in volunteering for this effort or others, we invite you to write us and let us know what you'd like to do, how often and how you like to work. We're sure to be able to find a match for you!

We thank God for each and every one of you who care enough to confront almost insurmountable odds to do everything you can to change this travesty in our world, often facing your own  humanity to do so, and putting your own emotions on the line to care for the voiceless among us: GODSPEED to each and every one...

New site to store AR images/videos

From A.R.M.O.R.Y ( Anmal Rights Media Online RepositorY)

We have just finished creating a new website which allows people/groups to upload their images/videos for other AR people to use in their campaigning materials.

It was created it due to recent attempts to find high quality images and video for a variety of purposes . Whilst doing this, we found it incredibly difficult to find high resolution images and video readily available for download.

The site is at:
http://www.animalrightsmedia.com and we are calling for people to place their images/videos on it for others to use. The one proviso for the site is that all the images are royalty free and the copyright is either owned by the poster or is un-copyrighted.
