The Breed Specific Legislation aimed at
Pit Bulls in Denver Colorado and passed by 'lawmakers has gained momentum and
if currently being enforced. Even those that do not own Pit Bulls are shocked
at the door to door roundup of innocent animals, the demands being made of
law-abiding citizens and the belief of Denver legislators that they can pass
and enforce laws that are in clear violation of the rights of Colorado's
citizens.
The need to fight this legislation is
clear. This law is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Citizens need to become informed and
align themselves with others who will fight for their rights.
The ONE group that is standing firmly against this legislation is
USANIMALPROTECTION.ORG and we encourage all animal caregivers to stand in
support of those who have PitBulls. This legislation is unfair but, above
that, it is ILLEGAL. The message must be sent to lawmakers that passing
legislation that violates the rights of individuals cannot and will not be
tolerated.

Mr. Oswald,
I understand that MCAS has given the public until Friday, November 24 to find
a sanctuary placement, or promise of one for this depressed young dog or he
will be euthanized.
Please extend that deadline. These are the Thanksgiving Day holidays and no
one, no matter how capable, can find a placement in that short a time.
As I understand it from the news coverage, Buddy was found wrapped in a sheet
at a local park with multiple injuries to his head, chest and legs. He was
treated at Dove Lewis. He has by report been depressed and in pain. Many
believe he was used as bait. So was Hollywood, a pitbull allegedly
belonging to Qyntel Woods. Yet more than sanctuary placement, e.g.,
foster organization, was permitted Hollywood, nor was there a short
deadline. This dog deserves as much sympathy.
My questions are: Was Buddy temperament tested or did you forgo this because
of his injuries? If tested, please give his responses item by item as the
tiering system adds no information and failed items are often as simple as a
cowering response or submissive urination. To allow more
information have you considered asking other outside community experts
(not in house) to see and make their own determinations about this dog?
Outside expertise often helps expand options.
It would be a shame for this young dog who has been through so much to be
placed on a deadline over a holiday weekend to find a life line.
Please help. I am sure that you are investigating options and contacting the
news media too.
Should anyone addressed have possible options these are several numbers you
can call at MCAS.
The agency telephone number is: 503-988 3787
The agency FAX is 503 988-3002
Michael Oswald is the Director. His extension is : 5 then 25234
John Rowton is the shelter manager: His extension is 5 then 25247.
One front desk number is 5 then 25225.
If you have resources and can't get through which is often the case over the
holidays, these are some options.
Thanks

Truth about Pit
Bull's/FOX news
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/PitBullAwareness
The above link is for the
FOX petition. Please sign!!! Below is the explanation. This is a petition to
get FOX News to do a segment on the truth about Pit Bull's. How they are not
naturally aggressive and how with the proper, respectful and responsible
owners they make great pets for children and families.
It's time we as
responsible owners and breeders show the public the truth about these dogs
instead of hiding behind the lies and being too scared to say anything in case
Pits get banned in our area. Hiding isnt saving these dogs. Waiting untill
there is a policy in place to ban the dogs is too late.
We need to pull
together now to help this breed of dog we all love so much.

Greetings,
One of our members pulled a couple of Siberians
from a kennel in Waynesville area this week. She reports a very sweet, loving
Pit Bull Terrier in need. Black and white , male, intact, possible
crytporchid?? Not sure, she was not allowed into his run, but then she was
there for Sibes. May only be a large left over scotum sack. He did give
her kisses. The kennel pulls from the Waynesville Kill Shelter and tries
to get them into rescues. They board free of charge. Would someone
please contact them - if you cannot pull, maybe a cross post? I know they
would appreciate the help.

The Wasco County Court denied reconsideration and ordered Denali killed.
Orders arrived in this morning's mail.
The Wasco County Commissioners proved their commitment to needless killing by
denying sanctuary placement for Denali and ordering her senseless death. They
provided no reasons, deliberating this matter on Wednesday and sending their
decision by mail.
Karissa Ball has ten days from last Wednesday, September 8, 2004, within
which to appeal to the Wasco County Circuit Court, giving one a sense of how
likely success will be. Karissa Ball has no job and no money.
Please protest these actions to the press and to the Wasco County
Commissioners. They do not live in a vacuum. As they vote, so is Oregon known
throughout this country. Wasco County is a tourist destination and
includes wind surfing on the Columbia River and Kah-Nee-Ta Resort as
examples. Citizens come from all over to visit this tourist area. Their
agricultural export includes orchards that supply fruit through out the
country.
The commissioner designated judge (no legal
training), Dan Ericksen, is an orchardist. To kill an animal when
humane alternatives exist just to prove that you can is shocking behavior
incompatible with the values of this country.
Subj: UPDATE ON WASCO COUNTY'S
DECISION TO KILL A YOUNG PITBULL FOR SCRATCHING A CHILD
Date: 9/7/04 1:20:21 PM Pacific Daylight Time
From: Gocbwatchdog
Update
On Tuesday, September 7, attorney Robert Babcock,
filed a motion for reconsideration with the Wasco County Courts of the
death sentence imposed on Denali, a young tan and white pitbull. Denali
jumped upon a child when he came to the door, scratching his chest and
causing a minor (1/8 inch) puncture near his thumb. Laurie Adams of
Casa Del Toro Pitbull Rescue, a respected pitbull rehabilitation program
in Franklin, Indiana, has offered sanctuary space to Denali. Please write
the Commissioners of Wasco County asking them to reconsider Denali's death
sentence and allow her to go the Casa Del Toro Pitbull Rescue.
The motion for reconsideration follows with contact information. Motion
for Reconsideration filed with the Wasco County Court, September 7.2004.
"Karissa Ball requests that the County Court
reconsider its oral determination that her dog "Denali" be destroyed as a public
nuisance. At the close of the original proceeding, counsel for Ms.
Ball advised the County Court that there were alternatives to Denali's
destruction that (a) would assure the public's protection from the dangers
allegedly posed and (b) would prevent the needless taking of Denali's life.
Attached to this Motion is a copy of an e-mail from the owner of a Pit Bull
rescue organization - Ms. Laurie Adams of Casa Del Toro Pit Bull Rescue in
Franklin, Indiana - confirming the existence of that alternative. Ms.
Adams is available to be contacted by any members of the County Court to answer
any questions or concerns about her organization and programs. Even
if one does not share the view that destruction should be the last resort for
animal enforcement efforts, there at least three reasons why acceptance of Ms.
Adams offer is in the county's interest.
First, the hearing in this matter was held on the
same day that the county's agreement to transfer management of its animal
shelter to Home At Last was finalized. Home At Last seeks to preserve
animals' lives whenever possible through effective animal adoption and placement
efforts. Ms. Ball's offer provides the opportunity demonstrate that the
county's humane shelter policies are consistent with its enforcement practices.
Second, the organization offering sanctuary to Denali is part of a nationwide
animal welfare movement that can offer resources and opportunities - especially
significant in the case of Pit Bulls - that would aid Home At Last's efforts.
Acceptance of Ms. Adams' offer would provide improved access to those resources
and further enhance the reputation for humane programs that the county's
agreement with Home At Last established.
Third, whenever a county aligns itself with
organizations devoted to the protection of animals' lives, it becomes eligible
for very substantial financial assistance (up to $1 million) from an
organization - Maddie's Fund - headquartered in San Francisco. Wasco
County's contract with Home at Last is a first step in gaining that financial
assistance. Acceptance of Ms. Adams' offer and participation in the
national programs would be important additional steps to obtaining that needed
funding.
By reconsidering its order to destroy Denali and
accepting the offer from Casa Del Toro, the County Court can prevent an animal's
needless death and improve its reputation and ability to continue the humane
programs established by the arrangements with Home At Life.
Ms. Ball is willing to relinquish ownership of Denali and forego appeals if the
offer is accepted.[1]
DATED: September 7, 2004 Respectfully Submitted,
Robert E. Babcock, OSB #70006
1. Because of some comments made by representatives of the District
Attorney's office, I would be remiss if I did not also note that killing
Denali because of Ms. Ball's inability to pay boarding and impoundment fees
in accordance with the "agreement" obtained at the time of Denali's seizure
appears to be inconsistent with Oregon law and a basis for civil action
against the county.
Brief Case Summary and contact information
On September 1, 2004, within minutes after signing a contract with Home at
Last Humane Society, a local progressive organization committed to ending
needless killing, the Wasco County Commissioners held a "public hearing" and
ordered a young female tan and white pitbull, Denali, destroyed for
scratching a child. The injuries included scratches to the chest accompanied by
one minor puncture wound near the thumb compatible with either a tooth or
toenail. It was a nonaggressive encounter and occurred when the
childcame to the door of Karissa Ball's house as she opened the door. No
animal behavior experts were included in the hearing.

Hello, I
was told to send out a couple of e-mails to help a doggy in need
that needs a rescuer. She is about 2 to 3 years old. A very kind,
and sweet lady found her on the street. She took her in and the
doggy wouldn't leave her sight. She is just a sweetie-pie. But the
nice lady didn't have a choice but to give her up, since her husband
is very sick and they absolutely couldn't keep the dog. But she had
been taking care of her for about a week. She cried and cried on the
phone when I spoke to her, and said she thought she betrayed the
doggys trust by giving her up like that. It was truly
heartbreaking. This doggy is a pit bull, and believed to be a full
breed. She is a dark brindle color, and right now at the East Valley
Shelter. She was found very healthy, great shape and spayed. If you
want to see her , the ID # is A669782. If you want to look at her
online
www.laanimalservices.com
. She will be under the East Valley Shelter. She is a loving dog
with a GREAT personality. The picture of her on the website is not
that great, she is MUCH MUCH cuter than in the picture. The lady
that found the dog.. her name is Joyce, and you may contact her :
818 838 7033 If you are willing to take the dog, she even said
she'll pay to bail her out. The doggy doesn't have much time, and
PLEASE PLEASE try to find someone that would want this doggy. It
would be wonderful if you could save her. The shelters number is :
818 756 9323. Please call. Thank you sooo much. THIS DOG'S PICTURE

KERO NEEDS RESCUE!
There is a pretty female pit bull at the
SPCA in Georgetown, DE. She is a year and a half old and very
friendly. This shelter does not adopt out Pitties over the age of 6
months. The staff feel she is a very friendly dog and the director
asked me to see if we could find a rescue to take her. If she does not
go to a rescue she will be put to sleep. This girl was such a waggle
butt when I tried to get her picture, I couldn't get any good ones.
Thank you!

*** STORY *** On September
3rd, during a routine stop to take a mugging victim's statement, Oakland
Police Officer James Smith stepped inside the courtyard of a crowded
apartment complex, and without warning, opened fire. His target was one of
BAD RAP's finest demonstration dogs - Rupert (shown here).
The bullet missed Rupert,
ricocheted off the pavement, bounced off an awning and seared through the
apartment building's wall, stopping just two feet away from a four month
old infant. The child is the daughter of BR's co-founder Amber Niewold.
Moments before, Rupert had
greeted a moving company that had just arrived to pack the couple's
belongings for a big move. But within minutes, their plans were derailed
by the near miss of a bullet, all because the police officer panicked at
the mere sight of a pit bull.

Why Would Anyone Want a Pit
Bull?
The fun loving, spunky and affectionate attitude of the APBT is what most
admirers come to love best about these dogs. We like to say "To know them
is to love them". Pit bulls are impressively loyal, bold and courageous
animals. They are natually clownish, alert and intelligent .. in other
words, a whole lot of fun to have around! Many participate and excel in
various dog sports and activities, including Obedience Trials, Search and
Rescue work, Agility Trials, Flyball and Frisbee Competitions, and Weight
Pulling events. With their tenacious work drive and strong desire to
please their owners, they are natural competitors and win impressive
titles wherever they're worked. (The photo on the left is Deputy Sheriff
Alan Benninga and his trusty K9 pal who was trained for patrol and
narcotics work in Clay Co KS. - Thanks to Alan for letting us show off his
pride and joy!)

The purpose of the group is to alert people to upcoming changes in

bulls, rotties and other normally-targeted breeds - we alert to
changes in dangerous dog laws, mandatory spay/neuter laws, etc. If
you love your dogs and want to retain your rights to own them
responsibly, please join us. It's a new group and there isn't a lot
of activity on it yet, so we need your participation!

Correspondents Advocates, Writers
Photographers, Reporters and Liaisons Needed!
There are a myriad of positions available
for many different agencies throughout the U.S. There is a great need for
shelter workers and volunteers, liaisons, political activists,
campaigners, publicists and press people, photographers, correspondents
and, yes, transporters!
Most of these positions are not, in and of
themselves, demanding. Of course, if you care about animals they can
become very time consuming efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and
varied talents of those who are doing this work -- many out of the
kindness of their hearts.
If you are interested in volunteering for
this effort or others, we invite you to write us and let us know what
you'd like to do, how often and how you like to work. We're sure to be
able to find a match for you!
We thank God for each and every one of you
who care enough to confront almost insurmountable odds to do everything
you can to change this travesty in our world, often facing your own
humanity
to do so, and putting your own
emotions on the line to care for the voiceless among us: GODSPEED to each
and every one...
