go to nopuppymills.com.. great site. i did indeed see a protest letter
for one of the PA Amish millers recently... dang if I can recall the name,
but he was similarly up for permit. there was a letter on the net
(perhaps from above group member?) on this issue. I believe his last name
is Esch? or Esh? Maybe Eli Esh?
Try that board (you have to join, but do it... they are VERY good).

Puppymill Fighters need your help!
Have you ever wished you could have just five minutes to tell a puppy
miller
what you think of what they do? We urgently need your help to do just
that.
We have been fighting the puppy mills in Lancaster County Pennsylvania for
several months now. We have had many successes. Two of the successes
happened over last summer when the zoning board of Leacock Township voted
to deny the applications for two people who wanted to establish breeding
kennels.
Last night those same two men reapplied. The information we heard made us
sick. I think it will make you sick too. If it does, please write to the
men and tell they what you think about what they are doing.

J. Samuel King, has been operating a breeding kennel since at least August
2000. He testified that he has Dachshunds, Pekes, Cocker Spaniels, Boston
Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers housed in wooden boxes outdoors with no
heat or air. He also testified that the people who care for the 70 dogs
that he has are his 10 and 11 year old children.
He said that he wants to build a 60 foot building and have 150 dogs. I was
part of a site visit at this facility last summer when the second
application was denied. I saw the dogs confined to small wood and wire
cages. They were young dogs already scarred by the confinement and
desperate to get out of their prisons. Their little feet were going
through the wires as they jumped and jumped to get the attention of
the humans who were looking at them. In one cage by herself was a
matted, emaciated poodle mix. Her leg was badly hurt and she was
limping. I reached my fingers in to rub her ears and although she
was at first afraid of me she leaned over and let me touch her. I
took a photo of her.
At the hearing last night the man testified that he had her killed because
one of her legs was shorter than the other and because he thought that we
would make a "fuss" over it. I laid awake all night thinking of that
poor
little girl who never knew love in her life. Probably the only loving
touch
she ever received was for the minutes I rubbed her. The man testified
that
the dogs never get out of the kennels and that in his opinion the space in
the wire cage is adequate exercise.

David E. King (they are not related), has been operating a breeding kennel
since at least last April 2000. This has been in knowing violation of the
zoning law. He has 65 dogs housed in a barn that was built over a 100
years
ago for pigs. The other side of the barn has cows in it. The facility is
so
dark that we were unable to identify some of the dog breeds during the
site
visit last summer.
There were Labs, St Bernards, Golden Retrievers, Dachshunds, Cocker
Spaniels, and Lhasas.
The dogs were housed in wire kennels. The wood beams that the wires were
connected to were rotten and would certainly be harboring disease. The man
testified that there was liquid propane heat available in the kennel that
was there when the pigs were located there. It is very unlikely that the
heaters are ever turned on because of the cost. It is also quite possible
that they were not even functional.
During the site visit we noted that the dogs were soaking wet because the
cages had been hosed with the dogs still in them. The waste from the
kennels is hosed to a pit that is under the kennel. The man testified that
he did not know what he would do if the pit backed up the sewage into the
kennel.
The Dachshunds were terrified, shaking and some looked like they were ill.
Several of the St Bernards had eye problems. There was a yellow lab who
was in so much pain she could not stand up. I will never forget the look
of
agony in her eye.

In East Lampeter Township there is a man who was granted a permit to open
a kennel about 9 months ago - he received so much negative mail that he
chose not to open the kennel. Please write to these two men, tell them
very
clearly what you think about what they do. Tell them in detail what
you think about them. The Amish hate publicity and the more attention we
can bring to this issue the more likely the elders will tell them to get
out
of the business.
Spread this information far and wide. Beg everyone you know to write.
Post to the group about dogs looking for loving homes. Post to the group
if
you wish to provide sanctuary for an otherwise doomed dog. Let's prevent
this grim consequence of overpopulation. Appropriate high priority to
SPAY/NEUTER programs. Educate unaware pet owners, help them find low-costmedical
attention. We are talking about life and death. Thanks for your
contributions, in word and in deed.
All the best,
Cynthia,
Listowner and Moderator since inception of these two groups in 1999.

SPARKY IS SOON TO DIE
He's young, he's pretty, he is a
friendly boy that's a shelter favorite. But he's in West Virginia and he's
classified as DOUBLE URGENT. That means he's about to be destroyed because
he hasn't been adopted and other animals are still coming in. They gas.
Any idea what that will mean to Sparky? Agony. Fear, Terror the likes of
which no animal should ever have to endure -- and it will happen because
the breeding continues.
Please Save Sparky... He didn't cause
this insanity and doesn't deserve a horrible, agonized death because
people have no sense... and no compassion. |
