The man dressed in green robes walks right past me with a momma cat. Her children left in the cage behind looked bewildered. Where did he take momma? It took him about 2 minutes and he was back again. And again. And again. There was a somber look on his face. This is the death ward at Miami Animal Control.

 

I walk in. Some dogs raise their head to see me better, some are too deep in depression to care. I rush to write id numbers, take pictures, jot down info, make calls and yell over the loud cries which ones I will put on hold. He continues taking more dogs. My hand starts shaking as I try to write faster. 

 

Suddenly, all the commotion ceases. The barks become distant. A dog looks into my eyes. My hand keeps writing but I cannot stop looking. We look at each other so sadly and so lovingly. Like a mother holding her baby for the last time. She is a large mixed breed. She senses death is near.
