RESCUE NOTES

The latest crisis to hit Point Pleasant is the dumping of 25 dogs from ONE FAMILY... These are rescue worker MISSY's notes -- and you can see from the look on Handsome's face that a horrible name hasn't been the only misery he's had to endure...

The "family" who surrendered Handsome to the Mason County Animal Shelter decided to move, and they decided they could not bring their family pets -- all TWENTY-FIVE of them -to the new home.  So Handsome and a bevy of others, many his siblings, were packed off to the Mason County Animal Shelter in Point  Pleasant, WV - a high kill shelter that destroys dogs by gassing them when their  time is up.  Last week, 40 new dogs came in to the shelter. The arrival of so many dogs at one time made it almost certain that there will be a mass gassing.  The newcomers alone are more than the shelter's limit.

Handsome really moved my heart.  "Handsome" wasn't the original name he was  given by his owners.  That name was so offensive, we couldn't even repeat it.  One of his brothers was originally named Fathead.  That will give you an idea of the mentality of the family who dumped them.  Handsome is a dalmatian/beagle mix, really a great combination, the size of a beagle, with black and white spots.  He's only two years old, and he has a wonderful disposition.  He'll do great in a forever home .... if he survives.  The county has ordered the Mason County Animal Shelter to adhere to a strict limit on the number of dogs kept and the length of their stay.  The arrival of so many new animals means that longer term residents almost certainly will die.  And as an owner surrender, Handsome, his brothers, his mom and his dad, all can be put down at any time.  Can someone PLEASE give this poor dog a second chance?
