SENIORS IN NEED:
Focus: Senior Dals

A Special project has been developed to draw attention to the issue of older Dalmatians -- with a special focus on saving these wonderful Dals who have been abandoned in shelters nationwide...
Subject: Senior Dalmatian Rescue Project-Southern California Save the Dalmatians' Board of Directors has decided to launch an ambitious Senior Dal Rescue Project in response to the unprecedented numbers of senior Dals going into Southern California shelters.
Resources permitting, we will rescue Dalmatians aged 9 or older and maintain them in foster homes until they can either be placed in a permanent home or transferred to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. There are currently two 12 year old Dals in the Agoura Hills shelter, a 10 year old and a 12 year old in the Carson shelter, a 9 year old in East Valley shelter and a 12 year old in the San Diego County shelter system. It is so sad that the owners of these Dals could not make arrangements to keep their old friends instead of putting them in harm's way in a shelter.
We are seeking long term foster homes in Southern California for these senior Dals. Save the Dalmatians will cover the veterinary expenses for the seniors and the foster home will provide the food and love. Senior Dalmatians are very easy compared to younger Dalmatians. They do not need as much exercise and so do not need a foster home with a big yard.
Less destructive than dealing with pups, we currently have two 15 year old seniors in our program who are being fostered by Susan of Escondido. This has been very successful--the two Old Ladies, as we call them, are enjoying life in a gorgeous home with lots of loving care. Their health has improved enormously. Both Old Ladies get to go for a mile walk every day and Domino, who could barely walk before, is walking great now.
Our success with Lady and Domino has inspired us to try to help the other seniors currently in the shelters. We thank Susan and also Dana Dulaney of Modesto for opening their homes to senior Dals. If you too can provide a foster home for a senior or two, please email me! We are also seeking donations for the Senior Dal Rescue Project. Each of the seniors will need a vet exam and probably a blood test to check for thyroid, liver and kidney functioning, at the minimum.
Our president, Maggie Esquiroz, will be conducting special raffles to raise money for our seniors as well as other special-needs Dals. Watch for them! We also have a special donation button on our News/Announcements page that you can use to donate to the program. Permission to cross-post to other Dalmatian, Rescue or Senior dog lists granted!
