Some Special Senior Pups

Right now, there are more than 150 animals listed on the AHS Newark Petfinder
site - which is great, because everyone can see the wide variety of lovable
animals available for adoption at the shelter.  With so many to choose from,
though, I'm afraid some of the beautiful seniors and special needs animals there
might get lost in the crowd.  So - just to highlight a few - here are some
special pets to choose from:

Piglet is an approximately 8-9 year old, spayed, American Pit Bull Terrier.
She is vivacious and loving with people, but not good with other animals. She
will need some training after being kenneled, but it is guaranteed that the
right home who will invest some love and time will be rewarded tenfold by Miss
Piggy.

Rocky is a 12 yr old brown & black shepherd mix who was surrendered to the
shelter by his owner. This poor boy was sitting forlornly in the back of his
kennel looking at me with a sad look while his kennel mate came running up to me
barking for attention. It was almost as if he knew he couldn't compete with
the younger dog for my attention. Anyone willing to make this sad dog feel
special again? ID N11588

Zeus is a rottweiler mix who came to the shelter as a stray. He is
approximately 6 yrs old and extremely thin. Zeus was very well behaved and calm during
our photo session. Afterward, all he wanted was attention from me. He leaned
against me while I petted his thin body and he thoroughly enjoyed it. This poor
boy needs someone to take him home love him, feed him and give him the petting
he craves.  N11949

Jeala - female German Shepherd mix - Poor Jeala was adopted from the Newark
shelter 6 yrs ago and now she is back. She is understandably a bit depressed
and timid in her kennel. Jeala is 6 yrs old and has a cropped tail. She is
listed as good with kids, pets and housebroken. Can anyone give this poor girl a
loving forever home?  N12221

Luke is a 5 yr old tan shepherd/lab mix who came to the shelter as a stray.
He is super friendly and will start wagging his tail a mile a minute when you
stop by his kennel and even does a whole body wiggle to show his happiness.
Luke preferred to get pets from me instead of the treats I offered him.  N12840

Apollo is a black and tan shepherd (and lab?) mix. He is approximately 5
years young. He was brought to the shelter as a stray so it is unknown how he is
with children and pets. As we were taking his photos he raised his paw for us -
as you can see in the photo! He seemed very eager to please. Won't you
consider adopting Apollo? N12598

Daisy - Meet Daisy! She was a real HAM for photos!!! She is a black and tan
shepherd (and Collie?) mix. She is approximately 6 years young but seemed
younger to me. She was an owner release. She knows the sit command and liked the
treats we gave her. Won't you come meet her? Just look at that face!  N13187

Angel is a Chow Chow who's previous owner indicated she is good with kids and
pets, however, she is not housebroken. (Maybe she was kept in the yard?) She
is approximately 6 years young. With some training she could be a wonderful
pet. What a pretty girl. We all need an angel around us don't we? N13676

Bear is a 5 yr old black and white shepherd mix with a curly tail. He was
surrendered to the shelter by his owner and is listed as being good with kids,
pets and housebroken. Bear is a very friendly dog who is well mannered (does not
jump up on you) and enjoys being petted. He responds very nicely to the sit
command.  N13608

Hercules is a 6 yr old rottie who was surrendered to the shelter by his
owner. He is listed as being good with kids and housebroken. Hercules is a
friendly, obedient, mellow dog who is a shelter favorite. He took treats from me very
gently and enjoyed being petted. N13742

Star is a 7 yr old black and white shepherd/husky mix who was surrendered to
the shelter by her owner. She is listed as being good with kids and
housebroken. I was very impressed by this dog and can’t say enough good things about
her. She was pointed out to me by one of the kennel workers who said that she was
a very nice dog and after meeting with her I have to agree. At first I
thought she was a bit depressed (huddled in the corner of her kennel), but I soon
realized that she was simply trying to avoid the shepherd that is kenneled with
her and that is a bit aggressive with her. She is so well mannered and
obedient that the shelter worker can take her out of her kennel without a leash and
walk her up kennel row with all the other dogs barking at her and she sticks
confidently right by his side. Outside of her kennel she is very friendly and
enjoys petting but does not jump up on you. She responds very nicely when
called, will sit on command and will give her paw when asked. When our photo session
was over, Star went back into her kennel without a fuss when told to do so. I
feel this dog would be excellent with a first time dog owner, senior owner,
or family with kids or even as a therapy dog. Will you be the lucky person to
give this nice dog a permanent loving home?   N13772

Sasha is a 9 yr old black and tan rotti who was surrendered to the shelter by
her owner. She is listed as being good with kids and housebroken. Sasha is
very calm both in and out of her kennel and walks nicely on the leash. The
shelter worker gave Sasha a bear hug from behind and she seemed to enjoy it very
much. Anyone have room for this gentle mature dog?  N14350

Cheech was brought to the shelter as a stray so it is unknown how he is with
children and pets. He seems to be Lab/Chow mix. As you can see in one of the
photos, his tongue is partially blue-black. He is approximately 5 years young.

Nikita is a 5 yr old black and white husky who came to the shelter as a
stray. She is fairly calm and enjoys it when people stop by her kennel. Sometimes
she will howl when you walk away from her. Its almost as if she is saying don’t
leave me. If you are looking for a loyal companion Nikita is the dog for you.

Senior dogs make the best companions - they're quiet, calm, usually housebroken and SO grateful for their second chance.  Much easier to take care of than a bouncy little pup.  Unfortunately, many people don't realize this and senior dogs languish in shelters for months, overlooked while the young dogs go off to new adoptive homes.

If there's anyone out there who is considering adding a new canine companion to their family, please visit the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro, NJ.  There are many wonderful seniors there who deserve their second chance.

The list includes:

Tara - Tara's family grew, and there was no longer a place in it for this lovable shepherd mix.  Small children make this dog nervous, and with a toddler already in the home and a new baby on the way, the family made the decision to surrender Tara to the shelter.  Tara is fine with adults though, and she gets along well with other animals.  At only 38 lbs., she's small for a shepherd and in an adult only home, she'll blossom into a wonderful companion and friend.  Tara is 6 1/2 years old, hardly a senior by today's standards.  There's a lot of love left in this dog.  All she needs is someone to give that love to.  ID 39486

Spotty is a beautiful dalmatian mix.  She was adopted from the shelter a few years ago and returned when her owner became too ill to care for the dog. Spotty is 10 years old. Unfortunately her owner's daughter who turned the dog in could not tell us anything more about her. From one of the shelter's volunteers: "Spotty is a very calm, sweet, friendly girl. She seems fine with other dogs and she is easy to walk. When I take her outside , she does her business and enjoys attention from the volunteers. I think that she would be a wonderful companion for adults and older children. " ID 39270

Ginger (aka Brownie) - It  would be hard to find a lovelier dog than Ginger, with her soft, golden brown coat and big soulful eyes.  Ginger – who was then named Brownie – was surrendered to the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro, NJ by her family because she needed surgery for a torn ligament, and her owners claimed they could not afford to pay for it.  Ginger was a lucky girl, because the FOCAS volunteers fell in love with her and covered the cost.  The shelter staff and volunteers  re-christened her Ginger, and now that her leg is healing nicely, they’re all hoping to find her a happy home.  This female Jindo mix is about 6 years young.  The owners who dumped her claimed that in her former life, Ginger was an outdoor dog.  We find that hard to believe because this dog is totally housebroken. She absolutely will not go indoors.  She also is well socialized -- extremely calm, gentle and affectionate. She’s easy to walk and eager to please, and we know  she’s going to blossom into someone’s best friend.  ID 38709

Mopsy- is a male lhasa apso, a cute little guy who was in sad shape when he was brought in as a stray. Now that he's been groomed, he's feeling and looking much better. Mopsy has a tumor that will most likely need veterinary attention, so it would be great if a compassionate soul would give him a second chance and get him the treatment he needs.  ID 39353

Duke - Duke’s owner told the shelter that he was moving and could not take the dog because he’d be working too long hours. He said Duke is housebroken and good with children and with other animals. Duke is 6-7 years old. One of the volunteers reports: "When I walked Duke and stopped to talk to another volunteer, he was very near the cat cages but did not react to them. In fact, he laid down and waited for us to finish talking. While we were outside, he was very calm and friendly."  ID 38184

Perkins is a handsome adult male yellow lab mix.  Abandoned outside the shelter several months ago, he rapidly became a favorite of shelter staff and volunteers.  Apparently, he had a home once upon a time, because he appears to be housebroken. He loves to get his neck massaged. When he was found, he was wearing a collar that was much too tight, and was cutting into his neck, so he obviously didn't get the care he deserved. Despite his age, estimated at 6-7 years, he's active and enthusiastic.  Perkins enjoys his walks, and in his enthusiasm, he does pull a bit too much when he first starts out, but with a little training, he'll do just fine.  Perkins seems to genuinely enjoy the company of people, and he's fine with most other dogs. Perkins is a dog who truly deserves a second chance at a loving home. ID 37183
