Soldier Begging For Dog Food For Deployed Dogs

Commander Says Dogs Live Off Scraps And Garbage

POSTED: 2:58 pm EST January 5, 2005

The commander of an Army Reserve detachment in Iraq is begging friends back home to send food for Iraqi police dogs.

Capt. Gabriella Cook said in e-mails that the 13 dogs at the Iraqi Police Academy in Baghdad are living on table scraps and garbage. She said some of the dogs are sick -- and there's no way to get real dog food.

Cook's unit -- the 313th Military Police Detachment, based in Las Vegas -- arrived in the Iraqi capital last month. A Nevada veterinarian estimated that each of the police dogs needs 40 pounds or more of dry food per month.

Nevada Sen. John Ensign is a veterinarian. He said he has an aide investigating. But when contacted Wednesday, his office said they were unsure where to send donations and that they are looking into it.

One of Cook's friends said it would cost $50 to mail a 30-pound bag of dog food to Iraq. Another friend estimated that each of the police dogs needs 40 pounds or more of dry food per month.

If you would like to help feed the dogs, you may send checks to the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society. They are working with several companies to ship food to the animals as soon as possible.

"PetSmart has donated a pallet of food, and we hope PetCo will do the same," Judith Ruiz, president of the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society said.

Ruiz said several companies have donated food and that with the money, the Humane Society will be able to buy more dog food at a discounted rate and will also pay for shipping to Iraq.

"All funds will go directly for the animals," Ruiz said.

The Humane Society is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. So your donation will be tax deductible.

Subject: [A2C] Fwd: Foster Homes in AZ & GA Needed for Soldiers pets

This email is sent on behalf of Military Mascots - http://www.militarymascots.org/
Urgent need:

We have a family stationed at Luke AFB in Glendale, AZ in need of a short term foster home for one of their dogs, 18 mos. female Rhodesian Ridgeback for approx 4-5 weeks.

This is their first duty station and they own 3 dogs but only allowed 2 when living on base.  They have a bid on a home but will take time to close papers on it.
Soldier claims she is very sweet and has been obedience trained to the highest degree, he is a professional  trainer and says she is a pleasure to have around. She has not lived with children but has been exposed to them.
Weighs 90 pounds, very well behaved in the house and outside.  She likes other dogs but takes approx  takes 30 minutes to get used to some dogs.

If you could be of help, please fill out a foster home application on the ''How to help'' page of the Mascot website.  www.militarymascots.org

Thank you for your support!
Bonnie
