Elwood - 14 year old cat given up by owner
Thank you to all of you who responded to the email about Elwood!
We are so grateful for the many responses from wonderful people
offering to open up their hearts and homes to this little girl. We
can't tell you how very touched we are by so many concerned people!
Elwood is still in our care until she has run the course of
antibiotics. We will then take her back to our vet to check on her
kidney values. Hopefully this was just an infection and not the onset
of kidney failure. In the meantime she is getting lots of attention
and affection - as well as being hydrated with subcutaneous fluids
daily. After we learn the results of her bloodwork we will be much
more aware of how much maintenance is required to keep her healthy and
happy.
One more thing that we have learned about Elwood is that she does not
like other cats. This little one is actually agressive with my five
other cats who are just about three times her size! It would be in
Elwood's best interest (as well as other cats!) to live in a single
cat household.
There is another sad situation that we hope you don't mind us
mentioning:
Arnie and Amos are two very handsome brothers that were brought to a
shelter when they were a year old. This shelter is run by a collector
and does not advertise, so due to no fault of their own, they lived
there until they were seven. We pulled them from that shelter last
year and found them a wonderful home. Unfortunately, their human
mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer six months later and they
are once again homeless. They are very depresed having lost the only
home they ever had.
They are approx. seven and a half years old, very healthy, neutered,
and current on all shots. Amos is very friendly, loving, and
affectionate, while Andy is shy and mostly keeps at his brother's
side. If anyone is interested in giving these brothers a home, please
let me know! I would also be very appreciative if this is forwarded as
well!
Please stay in touch and we will keep you posted on Elwood.
Many, many thanks for your kindness,
Deborah, Ellen, and Lisa

I
saw this dog the other day. He is MAGNIFICENT looking. He seemed
very very sweet, you could see it in his eyes. But he whimpered and
then growled slightly when people came too close. I'm no expert but
he didn't seem to be to be aggressive at all, just terrified. HE IS
A BABY, by the way, quite young. THIS DOG IS WORTH SAVING!!!

Subject: LA, CA - dog abandoned at dog park was MOLESTED, needs help
Maria (a lady who rescues strays) asked me to pass this along. Elsa is the
retriever who was found abandoned at the Silver Lake dog park last week
with blood and discharge coming from her vaginal area. Maria got her to
the vet, where she now has a bill of several hundred dollars for Elsa's
care.
In a message dated 7/13/04 7:28:47 PM,
Mariafiji@cs.com writes:
My vet thinks that Elsa was molested. Her vagina was very hurt inside like
a huge object or even penis had penetrated her. She has trouble trusting
people now and gets anxious when someone approaches her, but the
technician who is working with her says she is doing better. Only 3 people
have called with donations, please try to help.
To contribute towards Elsa's care please call 323-256-0405.

A LESSON IN MEDIA ATTENTION!!
Wonderful news! No doubt
thanks to all the attention brought to these dogs at our shelter,
we had a banner adoption day yesterday (7/15) of these
dogs!!! Thank you to everyone that forwarded emails and made this
possible, it gave us some much needed space in our kennels.
ADOPTED 7/15 - A164076 "Snoopy"
2 year male purebred Beagle, total doll, mellow, non-barking in
kennels. He can appear a bit aloof when he meets new people but
he'll come trotting up to me in the yard with his tail wagging if
he sees me now.
ADOPTED 7/15 - A137935 is "Grizzly" is a small (35 lb) Boxer and
Shepherd mix who was living in a household with small children
that she adored, she is housebroken too! She will bark if left
outside alone all night (which is what her owners were doing), but
is trained and very well behaved inside. She loves to play! 1.5
years old.
ADOPTED 7/15 - A164314 "Jenny" 2 year female terrier mix, busy
little girl, lots of energy, loved to play and cuddle with
volunteers, friendly toward adults, children and other dogs that
visited her on the mobile adoption unit.
MUCH LOVE RESCUE WILL TAKE IF NOT ADOPTED THIS WEEK - A164465
"Aldo" 2 year male Chihuahua, chocolate colored, a little on the
shy side.
ON AN ADOPTION HOLD AS OF 7/16 - A164215 "Lisa" 7 year old
Dachshund mix, an absolute little angel of a dog!
STILL AVAILABLE:
A161191 is "Zisco" 3 year black
Lab mix, neutered male, sweet, good on leash, was very
playful/rough with large female dog in soc, jumping on her, but
not aggressive. Has an old injury to his back leg that makes him
sometime hold it up when he stands, does not effect movement and
would require no treatment. Here since MAY 26th.
A161948 is "Brownie" a 3 year old female Pit Bull mix who has been
here since JUNE 4th - she went out on the mobile unit and was
sweet, quiet, gentle and very affectionate, lovely dog with very
good manners, was patient and sweet with all the other dogs around
her.
A161955 "Leila" 7 year old spayed female white Husky mix, very,
very nice dog, mellow, been here since JUNE 4th.
Best regards,

Correspondents and Liaisons Needed!
There are a myriad of positions available
for many different agencies throughout the U.S. There is a great need for
shelter workers and volunteers, liaisons, political activists,
campaigners, publicists and press people, photographers, correspondents
and, yes, transporters!
Most of these positions are not, in and of
themselves, demanding. Of course, if you care about animals they can
become very time consuming efforts, indeed, and we appreciate the vast and
varied talents of those who are doing this work -- many out of the
kindness of their hearts.
If you are interested in volunteering for
this effort or others, we invite you to write us and let us know what
you'd like to do, how often and how you like to work. We're sure to be
able to find a match for you!
We thank God for each and every one of you
who care enough to confront almost insurmountable odds to do everything
you can to change this travesty in our world, often facing your own
humanity to do so, and putting your own emotions on the line to care for
the voiceless among us: GODSPEED to each and every one...
